I read another thread labeled madlib vs. dr. dre poll. i thought it was a bit random of a mix, so i decided to take this thread in a little more focused of a direction. (no offense or hate to the other threads op! just going off your idea)

to start this off, i took a class my sophomore year of college at California Institute of the Arts (Calarts) called "Boom, Bap, Boom." the class was led by a scholar of hip hop and poetry named Prof. Douglas Kearney. in boom bap boom, the curriculum covered the emergence of hip hop culture as a whole, hip hop as an umbrella term over mc'ing, turntablism, graffiti, and breakdancing.

our first assignment was to bring something that first interested us in hip hop. a lot of kids brought tags of ny trains, some of breakdancing videos with afrika bambaataa dj'ing. i brought in pete rock/cl smooth's "all souled out" album to play a couple of tracks for the class. pete rock first got me really into hip hop. this put the thought in my mind, being an L.A native, home of NWA, Tupac, Death Row, the riots of 1992, and gangsta rap culture as a whole, what drew me closer to the vibe that the east coast hip hop heads were bringing to the nation?

in a short summary, strictly speaking hip hop music, i've come to the conclusion that the west coast and east coast lifestyle is so different culturally which harbors different aesthetics when it comes to the music itself. i always prefer the boom bap of the east coast, the drum breaks of the east coast compared to the 808's of the west. i love the james brown sampling over the george clinton sampling of the westcoast. ( i still love the george clinton and the parliament funkadelics though). i feel that east coast vibe is more of a headphone subway style while the west coast is bump in your system kind of a energy. even the way the coasts murk is different. east coasters will run up on you and shank you, versus west coast is the home of the drive by. (they are both synonymous with each other at times).

i could write an essay about this, but i'll stop here, share your views, your opinions. could be about music, it could be about just the lifestyle in general. and don't forget to vote fam!

Although the east doesn't nearly have the amount of new rappers, they're coming back as well just give it some time. Although currently, West > East

lmao, idk whether to take this thread seriously or troll. But since this is a topic I'm relatively well researched on, I'll say this, East Coast hip-hop has (largely) been defined by gritty "realness" in terms of aesthetics, ie rapping about the struggle of inner city living or just being a young black man in America in general, whereas West Coast hip-hop (or at least the majority of it) developed in contrast to that, as in portraying the image of hood shit without the substance.

The current trend of commercial hip-hop is a direct continuation of the precedent set by West Coast hip-hop in the 90s insofar as the aesthetic is more directed towards portraying artists as hyperbolized caricatures of recurring figures in the black community (pimps, drug dealers, etc) as opposed to the old-school standard of at least attempting to highlight the depth and complexities of the artists as individuals.

This kind of thing has been cemented time and time again by music industry figures. Notice how Eminem grew up completely idolizing East Coast rappers like Nas and the Wu-Tang clan which led to him releasing an album like Infinite, and then after working with Dr. Dre he transformed into Slim Shady, a character based on a single aspect of his personality that could be easily marketed.

All I do is smoke weed, blow lines, and listen to MF DOOM. And rap. http://www.facebook.com/SpacemanNYC

Hey, this thread shouldn't be taken seriously as in the level of artistry of the two coasts or just the topic itself? If it's the latter, funny how you have so much to say. If the prior, I apologize for assuming. I'd have to disagree on the west coast lacking substance because ice cubes death certificate talks a lot about Los angeles' inner city problems as well. Props on the enimen reference, never really thought about it like that.

Dirty south, can't hate!

To say the west coast rappers of the nineties such as ice cube don't have substance wouldn't be fair. That whole album is based on being a black male in the inner city Los Angeles during that time, which was actually quite substantial. Was the lyricism as abstract as what east coast lyricism was, no, but saying that the west lacked substance isn't fair again.

The line between regions is getting blurred.

Does Blu sound like a West Coast rapper?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG3NVmCj7oM

Does Jay Electronica sound like a Southern rapper?

Regional sounds still exist, but pretty soon they won't define artists anymore.

West Coast Music has alesys been based off swag whereas East was about Spittin doper than the next ♥♥♥♥♥. 2 uniquely different styles. I agree East is that headphone on the Subway and West is blasting in da whip shit. West has a mjre promising future and is lowkey runnin shit if you don't count the veterans.

Odd Future
Kreayshawn
Lil B
Pac Div
Nipsey Hussle

Just to name a few. All have potential and some are doing big things right now.

as of right now, the west is killin "hip hop" with lil b, odd future, kreayshawn, kendrick, etc.

and even though i live right next to nyc, i dont really love a lot of hip hop to ever come out of it besides tribe, de la, jz and 50. i guess those are somewhat major ones though

the west just always had a better sound to me anyway.
