Forget overnight success. In a matter of mere minutes, smack in the middle of the day on May 18, Kreayshawn officially arrived. That's when the 21-year-old rapper's video for "Gucci Gucci" started spreading online. The clip features its pocket-sized star wearing a Minnie Mouse headband while mugging all over West Hollywood and unraveling scatology such as: "Groupies follow me like Twitter/ I'm rollin' up my catnip and shittin' in your litter." Just a week later, it's accumulated more than 900,000 views on YouTube.
Kreayshawn, born Natassia Zolot, is a lovable oddball who holds fellow weirdos like rapper Kool Keith and kitsch film guru John Waters in high esteem. The Bay Area-raised, L.A.-based artist's mom was a member of the surf-rock band the Trashwomen, and there's more than a little punk attitude in "Gucci Gucci," a shit-talking master class that favors individualism over luxury branding. The rapper released a loopy mixtape called Kittys x Choppas last year, and she's currently readying a "more composed" album. When we spoke with Kreayshawn last Friday, she was at blink-182 drummer Travis Barker's studio waiting for Snoop Dogg to show up so they could chat. World, welcome Kreayshawn.
