cool

Depends on how good your mic is, if you need to beef it up and shit...
For mine I always go compression, reverb, EQ, gain if im feelin lazy, and sometimes an exciter
Not in that order

Slight reverb (or more if you want it), slight ping-pong delay, compression, EQ

always some reverb and echo, but the amount depends on the track. some tracks require more or less reverb/echo. just get cool edit pro and look up a few tutorials.

one of the most important things is making sure your shit isn't clipping or else it sounds terrible and causes emotion to kinda drown out

I use ProTools, and I use compression and some light reverb. Depends on the track really.

^ Wen ur mic input volume is loud into your setup up and its louder than ur recordin system allows... u can usually c on the recording get flat at the top versus having peaks and shit

yeah if the sound waves are flat at the top, you have clipping. the gain bar or whatever it's called also shows if you got clipping. usually it's a circle or square that turns red.

I have a simple mic plugged into my laptop and I'm using Audacity. It sucks. I was recommended the golden age pre 73 mic amp concerning the mic, but what do y'all find to be the most successful for software? I'd imagine it's all personal preference, but I'm just curious to see you guy's opinions.

If you're using audacity you might as well just download a cracked Adobe Audition, shit CoolEdit would be better than Audacity.
What mic's are y'all using?

Is Reason good for editing vocals? I'm trying to use it but there's so many fucking buttons! It's mad confusing. I'm using Reaper right now but I can't figure out how to edit the vocals there either. I guess I have to wait till summer to really sit down and figure this shit out.

My voice just isn't coming out the way I hear it. Other people say my voice doesn't sound like my recordings either. I need to find a way to add some bass and clean them up.

As convenient as some of these all-in-one programs may seem, they can be overwhelming. I've used Ableton and Reaper and they felt a tad overwhelming. I've never used Reason, but I really like ProTools for recording vocals, it's straight forward and works great.

Is Pro Tools easy/safe to "borrow?" I don't want to get a virus or a fine.

Previously you needed some sort of MBox for pro tools to work althought I believe the newest version is accessible on all formats MBox free. And just scan the folder you download, anything can have a virus. As for the legality, just don't get caught haha. I've never had an issue but it depends on your internet provider. Some take a more active role in illegal downloads than others, although I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for downloading ProTools.

Then you're a herb for paying some dude to do something that you can easily do yourself for virtually nothing these days.

Same w/ everyone else. Reverb & compression. That's about it.
Recording with a Blue Snowball atm lol. You'd be surprised how well of a condenser it is... Shit's ridiculously amazing especially for the price point. I got an AT2020, but I've no space to set-up shop in my room.

I have a M Audio Fast Track so I'd prefer a conventional condenser but I've heard some good things about some reasonably priced USB mics. I'm debating which to purchase.

You're better off with Adobe Audition, it's the updated version of Cool Edit.
