The Weeknd (Official Thread)

^ vocals match the album cuts and the overall sound with the live band is mind blowing. shit gets real cinematic at points like you’re watching a story unfold through the sound. definitely worth seeing/hearing/feeling for yourself

weeknd destroys it on tracks...but live, he still has some work to do. Heard him at his Toronto concert and OVOFEST and his vocals, in my opinion, are actually a bit off than what I hear on tracks. His band is great though, but he himself still needs to work on his performance live.

Video is pretty good, lots of imagery and symbols relating to the song but he gives it a different persepective.

Im sure Nabil would've done a better job directing the video if he wanted that kind of effect.

OK,for those who don't fully understand the video,I'll help you out.

Basically, the beginning scene is showing the fall of Ethiopia's leader, Haile Selassie. He was assassinated in the 70's in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Then it shows the woman and man teleporting back into space, signifying that they had finished their job.
To my understanding they are the "Watchers",which could explain why the video takes place on the fictional planet "Ethio x"

When the song actually starts, you see how abel is going through his "breakup" with the unnamed woman. As it shows them separate from each other and become worlds apart litteraly,It signifies the revolt in Ethiopia.Haile Selassie was assassinated by his own people, which brings us back to the 2 characters in the very beginning of the video.

At the very end of the video, right before the scene with abel grabbing hold of the womans hand, the screen shows a close up of his face, which quickly changes into the face of Haile Selassie with a single tear in his eye.

In a sense, heartbreak was the cause of the revolt, and eventual assassination.

The romance between the two characters is actually secondary to the main symbolism, but I assume it was needed in order to fit the song, and for people to at least get a small grasp on whats going on the video.

Being a young man with mixed Ethiopian descent,I appreciate this video because of all the background symbolism, and the way it was shot. This shit is truly amazing.

This was enlightening. Thx bruh
I'm not sure, but isn't the reason they breakup because the queen cheated? I thought that the scene with the "goat man" thing was supposed to symbolize her cheating on him or something..

Here's another description I found on youtube:
"Basically The Weeknd & His girl was King & Queen of a single planet but she cheated. He caught her and killed her followers. He then puts them in this container for the Queen to see. She gets mad and they break up - The reason for the planet splitting. While on his planet her followers are sent to retrieve his heart. Problem is she couldn't break through his heart. He comes back to her now fallen planet and retrieve his heart. Moral of the story: She couldn't break his heart"

xvillen good analysis, but selassie death was never confirmed, some say rebels assassinated him while official reports claim he had respiratory problems. Good to see a fellow ethiopian on the forums tho!
