Hip Hop is currently in a state similar to the first time you have sex. You know what you are doing, but you have no idea at all what you are doing. While some artists manage to cope with the situation with ease (looking at this year: Black Milk, Madlib, Dark Time Sunshine) others just took the wrong turn and got lost. That's in short what I feel about Childish Gambino's CULDESAC.
Let me start with the rapper. He sounds terrible. I do not know whether he dropped the soap when he was in jail or whether his parents made him an eunuch when he was young. Either way, his voice is disgusting. But that is not the only problem, he stylizes his flow and lyrics to sound though-provoking and at the same time make himself more of an intellectual MC, while in reality he is one of those gay modern rappers Celph Titled talks about on "Nineteen Ninety Now".
Moving on to the beats, as some people would call them. If someone says this is experimenting and pushing Hip Hop to newer grounds, you are out of your mind. Unless, of course, making Hip Hop sound terrible is an experiment. Then I have got to give this album some credit.
Just like I said, there is nothing wrong in being original. As a matter of fact, I think in music, especially nowadays, it should be encouraged more often. But not to receive such results man, UGH!
