john coltrane - a love supreme, shit is an amazing album and isnt too long so your attention span wont drift

i love that album, shit if i had my hard drive on me i could give u specific album names, but these are some artist u should check for

miles davis - (he did a album with easy mo bee called bee bop or some shit like that, its like jazz rap instrumentals, but its good and worth checking for, i never heard a complete album by him tho, only specific songs, i'll see if i find the names later)

duke ellington - again, never heard a whole album just madddd loose songs

thelonious monk - i only had one album and to tell the truth, its only ok, but u might dig it a lil more than i did, he's mostly piano based

edit: im reserving this space for a charlie parker album i really want to recommend but i 4got the name lol, i'll look it up when i get home lol

also to anyone on the fence about jazz, test out the waters with guru from gangstarr's jazzmataz records, his 1st one was a fucking hip hop classic, his second one, arguably a little weaker but still great, they all sucked dick in my eyes past that

also check for the dream warriors who had a similar feel & arts the beatdoctor, but that last one is more like ambient, chillout hip hop based jazz, realll fire tho

Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk are definitely classics.

I'm a brass guy, my suggestions are: Paul Desmond, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Ornette Coleman, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Terrence Blachard, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garret

If you're new to jazz, first find an area you're interested in. There's different types of each and they all sound unique (ie. soul jazz, free jazz, latin jazz, fusions).

As others have mentioned, you can't go wrong with Miles.

For a more modern jazz cat, check out Stanley Jordan.
He uses a two-handed tapping technique and creates some
beautiful work - see youtube. He does his own stuff and covers
some classic Jazz numbers as well as Hendrix, Beatles,
Led Zep...

Pat Metheny says "Jaco Pastorius may well have been the last jazz musician
of the 20th century to have made a major impact on the musical world at large."
