The new Grizzly Bear is excellent. Wow. Definitely as good as Yellow House. I can't help but always think of Still D.R.E. when I hear Two Weeks.

I still think Dirty Projectors are gonna have the best album of the year.

The Strokes are as indie as it gets for me. Mostly a hard rock and glam fan.

Not that heavy into rock but i do dabble. Dont even know if this is hipster/indie or anything but My Morning Jacket - Z album is dope. Anyone else know any bands with this reggae/ska/dub type vibe to it?

^^really it's more of an aesthetic and/or marketing label than anything else. It pretty much means rock bands that, often but not always, are on indie labels, that you don't here on the radio, which experiment and deviate from "mainstream" sounds, and which don't fall under other genres such as punk, metal, hardcore, ska, etc. Even then that's a loose and incomplete definition. I could go on and on on this topic but fav indie bands of all time have got to be:

Pavement, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hotel, Yo La Tengo, Modest Mouse, The Strokes (I know their last LP sucked), Spoon, The Smiths, and Sonic Youth.

I think cause of the time period they came out in, indie rock wasn't much of a term, but I'll throw in The Replacements and Talking Heads as those are the two bands of the post punk/early alt era that have had some of the most influence on indie rock.

Recently been listening to the new Animal collective still, Grizzly bear (it leaked like a month or two ago but it sat in my itunes w/o a listen until 2 days ago), Pains of being pure at heart, and Lotus Plaza (a deerhunter side project). Put on Person Pitch again a week ago and have been listening to that nonstop once again as well.

head to your kitchen sink and drink as much of the liquids under there as possible ;]

And i agree that indie isnt supposed to be commercial but you cant blame the band for becoming popular and wanting to get paid for something they do well...

Anyway grizzly bear/tv on the radio show in ATL june 13th. im driving up with some heads :3

bonerpatrol....save for Radiohead, strokes, and Arcade fire, none of those bands ever really went mainstream or had much, if any, radio play (Smiths had How Soon is Now, Flaming Lips had She Don't Use Jelly). I think indie's one of the few genre's where the cream of the crop actually does tend to get the most recognition and become the most popular, as opposed to, say, rap where the most talented rappers are rarely the most popular (jay and a handful of others excluded). Most indie bands that stay very underground stay that way b/c they lack the talent to make a recording worthy of recognition and hype.

and btw, I know the title is "indie/hipster" so it's very broad, but I hope ppl aren't associating the groups like Passion Pit, the Knife (check out the chick's side project LP Fever Ray, it's ill), and empire of the sun w/ indie rock, they're experimental electronica and/or electropop essentially. They've got a lot more in common w/ the likes of Royksopp than Belle and Sebastian (has noone mentioned this group yet? prolly top 5 indie acts of all time).

Also, SMH at the love for Cold War Kids, that LP had a solid track or two but most of the tracks were pretty weak imo
