Can't stop foot drag unless you walk around like a robot

Heal drag is inevitable with Vans. If it's that much of a problem for you, just get some trainers.

Have you tried taking them off every once in a while or wearing other shoes?

i don't know what they're called, but there are these black plastic things that you can buy for $5 at almost any tailor to prevent heel drag.  the tailor nails them into the bottom of your shoes so that the plastic makes contact with the ground rather than the sole.
