Shoe sizing problem - In between sizes

So just got in some Bass Brocktons

One in size 8.5, and one in size 9.
8.5 fit's tight, unless I go no-socks.
But 9 fits a little loose, unless I wear thicker socks.

Dilemma, slightly tight, or slightly looser shoes?
Help me out!

if youre planning on using em as a summer shoe (no/thin socks) or think theres any possibility of stretching id go smaller.
year round, id go bigger. healthier for your feet, plus you could always put in cushions/inserts to take up more room
