Hey guys i recently wrote up a article highlighting 5 of the biggest branding mistakes i have seen with people starting their own clothing line. I thought i would share it with you all since a lot of new brands originate from these forums. Would love your input on the list i know there is always a exception to the rule but when going through brands for us to review of feature on our website these are really the thing's that we notice.

The full article is here

Let me know what you would change on the list or some things you see in the apparel industry that really irks you.

Great list.

The only thing I see that might be a little shaky is the "proud to be local" deal.

I look at guys like ONLY NY and how hard they rep NY yet their success is through the roof. Maybe its how effectively you can pull it off?

I think thats probably because its NY. If we where PxP OAKLAND then I bet that would totally downgrade our image. Not even based on how people perceive our city, just because its really not a name people want to get behind.

I deff agree its really how you pull it off and what kind of culture your city push's , I'm located over in portland, oregon its the Mecca of hipster culture so doing street wear inspired gear here while trying to only stay local is fruitless. Bigger city's like NY, LA ect if pulled off right can get a strong following if its somthing original that people can connect to.

Great list! Everything was so true and I see every single one of those things everyday and usually those brands do not last long at all.

Great post funny and true, i wish that ALL brands would read this before venturing out, could save them a lot of time and energy because some of the errors can be very costly and not to mention expensivesmile

Dope article, it was really insightful as well as true. I kind of laughed at the "Proud to be Local" part because I see it alot in fashion especially where I am from...

That's because their the only company can do that. There is nowhere else like NY and everyone wants to go there in this world and be apart of it.

BWGH - Brooklyn We Go Hard is an ironic form of proud to be local... They are playing up Brooklyn yet are from France.... So far it looks like its working with collabs from Opening Ceremony, Collette and others, they've only been around a year or so and are already in like 70 shops

Great list! I think what he meant on local is branding it as such in a way that you are confined to it. Some examples may be using a city name for your clothing, that keeps you in that city. Big city name like Brooklyn will work because their is a lot of history and culture, but if you are from a town with nothing on the map?

NO, It's just that New York Has a shit ton of people in a small space and it's envied and adored like no other city, it's the exception, you can make a successful business out of selling in New York alone because of that. You try it anywhere else and you'll fail.
