Starting a New Line/Brand Feedback Thread

May 05, 2013 @ 23:44
One thing I don't get with a lot of the brands on here is why everyone just uses their brand name as a shirt design. That doesn't count as creativity. I understand having one tee with your brand name on it because you want to have exposure and want to get your brand name out, but you have to come up with some other original ideas too. What is the purpose of your brand? What are you trying to sell or portray yourself and your future customers as? I feel like a lot of people are making clothes just to make clothes and don't have a passion for it. You won't make it in any industry without passion, especially not this one.
We only released one shirt that has full brand name on it...

It was a general statement based on a lot of the stuff I've seen on here. Although, I did go on your website and I only saw one shirt and it did have your brand name on it so...

Again, not trying to hate on anyone on here, I'm just giving my opinion. I think it's great that so many people are trying to follow their dreams and make a clothing line.

I had a similar problem, I thought of a name initially, hated it later on, this has happened about 3 times. I thought of one a couple months ago that I really liked and it had a good concept but I found out a pretty well established brand already had it. Only a little while ago I thought of something that I loved, had a great concept and wasn't in use, I think if you haven't figured out a name you like yet, you likely shouldn't start a brand because the name is really what defines it.

i wasnt talking about anyone i was saying how i need a name and i cant think of one i can appreciate on a long term basis

Part of the process. I finally settled on my fifth name since June of '11 around February. The name will come with developing and perfecting an aesthetic and vision, which for me has taken that long.

I'd say wait at least a year - while developing, brainstorming, etc. everyday - before trying to launch anything. It'll be more satisfactory to you overall and will give you the one up on the people who clearly rush into this with little to no additional thought.

It's tough coming up with a new you'll really love long term. I went through a few different names over the past year myself. Ultimately, if you're going to make a clothing company or brand you have to make sure you put out something that you can connect with and that will portray who you are. If not, then what's the point? That's my opinion at least. A lot of people do it just to make money, but I think it's obvious to tell which brands those are based on what they put out and how they present themselves. Figure out what's important to you in terms of design and inspiration and then go from there. Don't force it, a great name will most of the time come to you. Hope this helps!

Have you tried incorporating the girl into your B? Would be cool. The girl looks dope but looks a little off sitting on the bag
May 07, 2013 @ 01:02
Haven't thought about that yet. My intial thought was to make it a sort of capsule pack and make some more shirts of the same concept but I have only thought of 2 other designs to line up with it.
I was originally going to have her sitting on a bomb but wanted to match in the Bank theme.

Just curious, what do you guys draw inspiration from? I'm sure a majority of people on here draw some inspiration from hip hop and maybe some kind of sport, but what else serves as inspiration to some of you guys and your brands? I know that for me personally, I draw inspiration from the hip hop and basketball culture, but also just being a free spirit and living an open minded life.

Gotta go beyond your horizons. For me, that's meant exploring the arts, interests I had lost years ago, etc. What I've observed with start up brands is that some tend to pull inspiration from a very common pool, so they end up without a discernible identity, or looking like the latest trend - a good way to make quick money but not a way to grow a brand into a sustainable one.
