Do not get a heat press! Whenever you are thinking about a product, think about it from the customers POV "Would I spend £30/$30 on this??, why should i get this instead of something I canget on Karmaloop, though generic, I at least its a known entitiy" you need to give the customer a reason to step out of their comfort zone. Heat press makes me think of cheap/nasty Stag Party's (in the UK anyways).

There's lots of disadvantages of being a small independent label but the big advantage is that you have control of a small level of production so you have the ability to ensure your attention to detail is on point on EVERYTHING. if you're doing small runs.

@tubb3 i would say dont get a heat press....i know somebody who has a heat press and i used it and after 1 wash the design started to crack.......its to much of a hassle and is slow.....having to buy dark transfer paper and light transfer paper....

like its good if your making like cheap shirts to hustle but not to build a brand
Jul 16, 2012 @ 18:24
@tubb3 It all depends on what you are doing with that heat press.
The is paper transfer which yes do crack after a wash and even after it's printed is it hard to fold.
There is Thermoflex which is more durable. But if you have a shirt that shrinks heavily then you will notice that with the designs
And then there is sublimation which is a better option to use with heat transfer. It dyes the ink into the shirt giving it a softer feel and a longer lasting look. There are certain wash techniques to help the design stay in longer.

Sublimation dye would be the best choice of the few i can think of IF you do decide to get a heat press.

This is for all the people that haven't started a brand yet but are thinking about it (it could also apply to people that just started)
Pretty much its a article that talks about all the misconceptions of starting a brand. Definitely a good read.

Great article. Most of this information is very true. I see so many kids these days thinking that they can just put a few t's out and it will make them cool or famous. Little do they know that this overly saturated industry takes extreme dedication, hard work, talent, sweat and passion to even turn a profit. My guess is that 98% of the brands on this forum will never see any huge business success - and my brand could very well be part of that statistic. As long as you do what you love and love what you do, you can't really ask for more. Good luck to all the starting brands out there - your going to need it.

Nice! Love positive outlook. Hate it when the old vets try to discourage ppl. Its true that 99% will fail/just get bored. But theres the one %who are talented and dedicated enough to make a living from something they are passionate about. Thats all that matters right?

good words minsct. starting a clothing brand, takes much more than just producing a few tees, putting them at a low price and selling them. requires determination, patience, research, and $$$. theres a difference between selling shirts, and building a brand. some people get lost in the misconcept that owning a .storenvy account with no branding and 3 incoherent shirt designs printed on a gilden shirt is a clothing brand. a 'brand' is something you can recognize. Proper branding, coherent designing, brand message & meaning, and good marketing is what can boost a brand to success (of coarse over time)

Check out strdywngs.com for our summer/fall range out now. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Also got a question for you all -
Does anybody know how/where to get high quality embroided snapbacks made? Am I looking at trying to locate a manufacturer who can do this for me? If so anybody got any ideas?

Any help would be great.
Thanks
