Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know how many out there feel the need for a real "for us by us" lifestyle brand. There are a lot of "street" brands that make money from people in the street but none of the proceeds go back into the street, to help build up communities, schools, etc.

Am I the only one around who feels we need a real street brand, one with substance, style, and reinvest in the community?

Just a though, I'd like to know what some of you'll think.

peace

this was the concept behind kiks.tyo, but they kind of failed to achieve relevance outside of asia.

i care about the realness or "street cred" of a brand, whether it was a hard battle to the top, or some dudes that just said fuck it lets start a brand. i dont feel corporate ran brands with huge financial backing - specially at the start.

Im all about underground brands!
As far as giving back to the community from the proceeds of the brand - dont care. - thats just being honest.

I respect that, I think most people probably feel the same as you do. I just think it's interesting that certain brands are targeted toward in inner-city America (communities that are hurting). They take the money and turn away without thinking about doing something to improve these broken communities.

i see what ur saying - thats why i like brands started by innercity people ( like myself ). who struggled and came up out of that

but i think the problem lies much larger then that. It lies with the fact that people in hood ( just gonna come out and say it ) love showing money, love spending and love living out of there means. Where that starts from is up question, my answer is the The Man.

giving back is hard....most brands don't really make enough profit to live comfortably, continue the label and give back to the community....fashion is hell competitive and it's just a little hard to give cash out when you don't know when the next paycheck is coming in.

Having said that, the larger names & brands should be the ones giving back a little bit - but i think corporate structures make that a little hard to do very often.

Definitely hear you.

I think a lot of brands give back to the community, they just don't scream it out. "Giving back" is manifested in many ways, not just giving money. Some brands hold ca$h tournaments in the community for the youth, others have gone to schools to hold seminars for the youth and help them improve their skills to get into something creative or give real leads into company internships. One that comes to mind real quick is Johnny Cupcakes. I don't wear JC but that dude is really "giving" back. Go support him.

I'm originally from Jamaica Queens NYC and FUBU had a HUGE impact on our community during their start n rise. The original FUBU staff was all started with local youth community programs! I discovered n joined a NYC Jobs for Youth program in Harlem through FUBU. To this day, I credit that experience for molding me into who I am n where I'm at creatively. Most heads on these forums would never wear FUBU but they were some of the "REALEST" dudes doing this clothing shit! These dudes were real street business men that were very approachable and not snobbish like some of the current cats today I see at the fckn trade shows thinking they are fly because they sell shirts n caps. FCK OUTTA HERE!

Ultimately, you have to search around to find out the brands that are giving back through $$ or time. I'm sure you'll remember to dedicated some resources back to the community when you set your brand off!!smile

Peace!

I recently got involved with a brand with my friends called The Popular Kids. It's about a month old and don't have a full collection and things are going well. One of them is an artist and has a hard time showcasing his work so one of our goals for next year is to host an open mic night for up and coming talent in the area to perform...I guess that's how we plan on giving back.

Link is in the sig if you want to check us out.

Black Scale did this thing called the Tenderloin Project, they helped the homeless in San Francisco. I think they collabed with some of the homeless out in the street and a portion of the money from the shirts was given back to them.
