Google has entered the browser wars people

(jacked Opera's speed-dial)

Yep, to add to IE, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and the others, Google has now entered the race with the 'Chrome' browser, bases on webkit (same as safari). It should be available for testing very soon or by the time you've seen this thread.

Well to me it seems Google are really going all out tapping into a lot of projects. It's a good thing I guess, competition is good for the customers as we'll see better products.

But Mozilla must be a bit anxious condsidering google have been one of Firefox's biggest supporters, Google have also apparently signed on to help out mozilla til 2011 so this is a bit odd.

Looks pretty nice, considering it's still beta. I'll have to see when it's out whether I should keep using Firefox or not.

if you are using there network, it doesn't matter they can still see it.

i'm using it as i am typing this, its pretty fast. i like the minimal look of it, something firefox 3 doesnt have.

the only thing i hate is that i have to download new flash and other plugins.

using now to type this. Load times are good. Like the anonymous features. Needs RSS support. Uses a lot less system resources than Firefox.

So far so good.

i'm interested in how closes it sticks to the w3c standard. if not compliant i pray for fail. Really not trying to write another branch of js for yet another browser flavor...whoever said competition was good obviously wasn't a web developer

Using it right now, works fine. I almost feel the same as using Firefox. However, I took the time to fully read the comic and it looks like they're workin on some interesting new technology for Chrome to make it better than all the rest.

oh really?

Not only is Internet Explorer 6 absolutely abysmal, it held back web development at least a year or two, i thank the internet gods for firefox otherwise the we'd all be in internet hell.

You guys really shouldn't be complaining. It's only in the beta stage and the beta has only been out for about a day. Of course there are problems and bugs, that's why it's Beta.

people have to realize that this is more than a browser, its google's next steps towards creating an OS...

currently most google apps rely heavily on javascript and AJAX, which until now have most commonly been considered "single threaded," meaning if your running some javascript and it "crashes" or stops working your whole browser will crash....with chrome each tab is considered its own process, which inturn will only crash each individual tab...

if you look at this with a long term perspective, its easy to see how this will be a major player along with all of the web based apps google is/has been releasing...

there is obviously much more to it than this, but just a general statement...

read this little comic google released if you want more info

OK i've used it for a while now and some of the little touches are brilliant. I still honestly think Opera whoops every other browser's butt though.

I think it's a given Google will let the consumer choose their own look/theme eventually, I think that's all that is really holding it back from making it a serious competitor.

I really hope Google doesn't make an OS, because I can't for the life me think why people would want to switch to it. You need to go through hoops just to get things like Adobe CS and Steam to run on Linux, which isn't even supported by some manufacturers now - how is Google going to get them to port things over?

Still using Chrome? Well you might want to stop for a while and re-read the End-user License agreement that you skipped out on when you press "I agree" before the installation...

google isnt going to make a standard OS to compete with linux/windows/mac ... obviously that market is full.... and if you look into the technologies that google works with (web applications), they do not need a client OS to run those programs... as i said in my previous post this IS their "OS." Chrome is intended to be a new browser paradigm that facilitates their mobile applications with the current web technologies they use, such as AJAX

So far, it loads faster than other browsers, takes up less resources, but has huge security leaks and the shortcut page is a bit frivolous and useless in my opinion. Like somebody else mentioned, it's a sneak peek into their future plans, and a testing ground for their browser which will also make an appearance in Android on their GooglePhone.
