New Laptop

Sep 12, 2011 @ 22:28
I want something that offers the best possible value for around $500. I'm trying to steer clear of HP Laptops.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I just bought that a few hours ago after researching for about the past month.
If you are purchasing a laptop, buy Sager, Lenovo, MSI, or Asus. Everything else is pretty much shit.

edit: Oh and if you're buying a ThinkPad, you'll get tired of it before it ever breaks. Trust me, i still have mine running perfectly for 5 years.

uhhh i just got it and ... its a bit bigger than i expected
it's not bad at all for $550 but don't plan on playing any games.

it can play league of legends on lowest settings with decent frames

otherwise its perfect for school besides the size. its pretty light. just kinda fat.
thinkpads are known for never breaking, so.

edit: oh my cousin owns a pretty old thinkpad and he told me one night he had a crazy fuckin dream and when he woke up he was so fuckin scared he threw his laptop across the room and it slammed into the wall and dropped hard as fuck on the floor. it still works.

lol @ the last part.
Anyway, I thought I'd go with this one, just under $500.

Both those laptops are basically the same thing.
Those just have a slower processor and slower hard drive than the one i linked.
IMO the thinkpad is worth the price

edit: the battery life on the correct power profile gets me about 6 hours straight.
Sep 26, 2011 @ 18:11
Seriously, 6 hours? damn, that sounds good. If it was a bit smaller then it'd be perfection. But I guess that's a small price to pay for such good battery life and performance. I guess I'll go with that one then.
Sep 26, 2011 @ 18:16
Yeah about if i'm just doing little stuff like Word and have the internet open. Wait a week and i'll see if i can find you anything better.

Sep 28, 2011 @ 23:27

That's like $100 more than the two I posted. Is it better? ?)
Sep 29, 2011 @ 17:19
Hell yeah in terms of gaming. Much, much better. This is stepping into being able to play modern games smoothly.

He said first out gets it so I drove across town to get it.

Don't really like Mac but seems like you got a great deal. blushing
Still haven't bought a new one yet so I might check out some used systems on eBay or so
Oct 06, 2011 @ 17:26
I've been looking around for smaller and lighter laptops and I found two pretty nice one.
The ThinkPad x120e which is on average like 450
or the HP DM1Z which is suppose to be HP's alternative to the Macbook Air and its like around 500. If they took off the HP logos i'd buy this in a heartbeat.

But idk. I'm gonna wait for a while and see if anything new comes out like the x120e with the new E-450 processor like the DM1Z. Nerd talk probably doesn't matter to you but whatever lol.

I've seen used macs on craigslist as low as 200

Although I'm quite new here, I'll like to share my opinion.

It all depends on what you want the laptop to do. It can be gaming, for school, business or personal use. All these types of purpose need to have some things in common. These are  CPU, GPU, hard drive, screen size, RAM, durability(Battery) and of course price.

Let me explain.

For a budget under $500 , these are the variables you should consider :

CPU : don't go with anything less than an intel I core 3, unless you plan on doing minor things with your laptop. For more control over what you doing, running more CPU intensive programs, such as photoshops, streaming 4k videos and video talking. It can save you big time.

GPU: A moderate GPU will get the job done, somewhere from Radeon rx 480 or relative. For gaming purposes , I recommend nvidia geforce gtx 1080.

Battery life is a big thing nowadays, you'll get an average of 5 to 9 hours a day with used for most of these laptops. Unless you going for the Mac book air which is 9 plus. but, that's another budget.

Ram : 4GB and over. These days, things consume a lot of resources, therefore you need enough RAM to handle the tasks. It will also help when multi-tasking. If you still not sure , you can go with this Dell Inspiron , From this laptop list  .

Here are the features :
 Intel Core i3 5005U 2 GHz
4GB RAM
15.6 LED
