until you figure out what you should do with it,
you should put it in a bag which is covered with a thick layer of tin foil from the inside.
that way no signals will get out/in and it will be untraceable.
trust me, it works.

the important question though is, was the ipad on display like people could touch it and try it and shit?
or was it in it's original packaging? because if it was in a packaging it probably wont have a tracking software, but if it was on display there's a possibility that it might have a tracking software installed

you'll be fine. they'll brick it if anything. but theyre not gonna track u down for 1 ipad. if youre paranoid, you (your friend) should sell it on ebay, and use that money to buy a legitimate one.
