The shoe and the brand have always been iconic. That's why re-releases work. It wasn't probably until the past few years that they realized that the product strategy had to be more about the positioning vs. the product in order to sustain the excitement around a shoe they keep re-releasing with minor tweaks.killing each other over shoes?? wtf??
To answer your question yes there has always been this much excitement around the Jordan shoe. I know Asian and White kids weren't on Hypebeast blowing all their money in the 90s, but little Black kids were killing each other over them in the inner city. It doesn't get much more hype than that.

The hype 20 years ago, I'm positive isn't at the same level as it is today. Jordan's have always been a staple in the sneaker community, we all know that. When it came to the love for exclusives(limited releases), vintage, and elusive color ways it seemed to be more of a underground sneaker head thing. Now, everyone thinks they're a sneaker head, its like the thing to do now, it just seems to be the new craze...it surely more trendy then ever.This. Just like how everyone is a "pothead" today, it's a trend. They see their favorite rappers doing thing and then mimic what they see.
Even looking at from like the early 2000's to now in 2012 almost 2013, it seems like the mainstream popularity of this kind of sneaker following has took a turn for the masses.
