Can someone fill me on all this?

I haven't been in on the Jordan craze of lately but I am curious as to if it was always this popular? I know the Jordan brand has been highly appraised for quite some time.Everyone would be excited for the latest release even prior to now but in recent years has it risen to new heights to even more of the main stream public beyond your typical underground sneaker heads? I mean news coverage of people waiting for Concords would be an example, everyone on instagram posting their bred 4s and I do mean everyone.

It seems as if its become rather trendy and I don't always remember seeing this much hype surrounding the brand until lately, especially at this level. It's just weird everyone wanting the same shoe and then everyone goes to wait in line, on to the next day where everyone is having the same shoes on. Maybe it's just me but it just seems to lack any originality and when everyone has the same shoes on, where is the unique individuality at?

Is this something rather new that arose in the last decade or so?

I always remember Jordan's being hyped. 20 years ago to get the NC's was cool and not many had it. The originals were damn near impossible. Lately though it seems like there are tons out there and everyone wears them or puts them into pictures with their clothing to match next to them.

I have noticed the extra hype but I think that's because back in the day we got one release a year. Now, there is probably tons.

When it came to the love for exclusives(limited releases), vintage, and elusive color ways it seemed to be more of a underground sneaker head thing. Now, everyone thinks they're a sneaker head, its like the thing to do now, it just seems to be the new craze...it surely more trendy then ever.

Even looking at from like the early 2000's to now in 2012 almost 2013, it seems like the mainstream popularity of this kind of sneaker following has took a turn for the masses.

That pretty much sums it up. That and resellers have really emerged over the past few years. People think they gotta have every pair and in every color and resellers will try to sell every jordan that comes out.

Jordans always had hype, much more demand than product. But today you have rereleases and all the highschool kids want jordans to be cool, the basketball players want them for sure, plus there's all the older people who want them again, it's like double the demand. There's never enough for the demand.

Plus girls wear Jordans now just as much as guys.

People nowadays want anything thats limited or seen as original. A whole lot of people are into the same style due to social media. Everyone wants to dress like everyone else/celebrities.

It's like Jordans are an essential piece to any out fit nowadays for most "trendy" people.

Back in the day more people got them for their purpose, which is Basketball or because they were a fan of MJ. There was a small subculture. Now its mainstream. Today Jordans are one of the biggest fashion trends...but they never die out.

Most of all, Nike creates a craze by limiting them and making everyone keep wanting them more. I don't remember stores only getting 12 pairs like they sometimes do today 5-10 years ago.

Yup, I don't even see why people would want to wear some of them with everyone and their mom rocking a pair. I much rather stick to some not so trendy shoes, that I feel accomplish the same goal as far as style goes and what suits me. Throw on a pair of Vans, maybe some Janoski's, but even though the Nike SB branch has a good bit of hype, I feel as if those still have a little underground vibe giving them a little more charm, they're little more atypical in comparison to the mainstream mall releases .

I have to cop my Nike SB'S in the heart of city at the skate shop which makes it all worth it when you support your local scene and I like that at least with the SB's Nike hushed down the typical money grab retailers and limited them to skate shops but there are still a few money grab retailers selling them...not as much though.

The shoe and the brand have always been iconic. That's why re-releases work. It wasn't probably until the past few years that they realized that the product strategy had to be more about the positioning vs. the product in order to sustain the excitement around a shoe they keep re-releasing with minor tweaks.

To answer your question yes there has always been this much excitement around the Jordan shoe. I know Asian and White kids weren't on Hypebeast blowing all their money in the 90s, but little Black kids were killing each other over them in the inner city. It doesn't get much more hype than that.

With more social networking apps and sites popping up, people now have more places to display the hype. Simple as that!

This was no joke in the early 90s. We rocked gazelles, clydes and cortez for this reason.

This. Just like how everyone is a "pothead" today, it's a trend. They see their favorite rappers doing thing and then mimic what they see.
