Hey I haven't ran in about 2 - 3 years ever since I stopped running on my cross country team but I want to start running a couple miles every few days and I need a new pair of shoes to run in. I also want to use these shoes for other activities like hitting the gym and lifting. Any suggestions? Thanks HB

All cross trainers are best for gym work, only recommended for 10-15 miles/week because the focus is lateral stability vs. cushioning.

For running some of my favorites right now are the Saucony Kinvara and Free Run 3 (both considered to be on the minimalist side of things) if your looking for something more supportive the Nike LunarEclipse is solid.

Asics Gel Nimbus 13 are pretty good.

Nike Lunar Eclipse+2
Nike Air Structures

Basically I rotate back and forth between my Asics, Nikes, and Brooks pairs various times during the week. Not having to wear the same shoe everyday makes my pairs last a little longer.

I run in Free Run 2, but switch to a pair of beat PF Flyers for lifting.
I dislike running, so <10 miles a week lol.

So it's better to invest into multiple pairs of shoes then.

No. 1 pair of definitely enough for running "a couple miles every few day". It's not like your gonna run 20+ miles a week right?
I would go to a sporting good store to try on shoes, before ordering any online. Gotta choose a shoe suitable for your feet: arch or pronation.

I personally wear my PFs for lifting, cause I don't like the feel of cushiony shoes while lifting.

Go to a running store and figure out what type of feet you have. Free runs look great but aren't for everyone, they're good if you like no support whatsoever and good if you're transitioning into barefoot running.

For lifting it's best to wear flat shoes like vans or converse.

Yooo I as about to pickup some hurricane frees yesterday but they ran out of my size. You guys recommend them best for outdoor running? Or am i better off with some real running shoes?

Just Get the free runs if you want a lightweight experience, New balance if you have a wide foot, or airmax 95-2012 for extra cushioning.

i've been running in free runs since they first came out. love them. once they wore out i got the free run 2s and honestly i feel like those were a downgrade. they just didn't feel the same to me. i picked up a pair of vibram five fingers the other day though and have to say running in them is amazing. i feel like my feet have really gotten stronger. i would highly recommend them.

Asking people on a forum what shoes for running is like asking what size to buy - unless they know you, they can't give you a helpful answer. What suits their running gait (overpronater, supinator, high arch, inward knee-flex) might not suit you and on this forum, some will even answer purely on cosmetics ("get these - they look cool").

I own over 50 pairs of trainers/sneakers, but I would only run in 3-4 of them. I learnt the hard way - running 10k races in the wrong shoes caused knee damage that took a LOOOOONG time to recover from.

A running shop will film you on a treadmill and advise on the right shoe. Good luck!
