"The failure of all available models of modernity, the disappointing reality and ubiquity of the internet, the frustration that the reality of Tokyo is nowhere near as good as the trailer for Enter The Void, the practical impossibility of originality."

"Sk8thing (“THG”), Hishi and I ended up being the team that put together the collections for Billionaire Boy’s Club. I was with Nigo when he first volunteered to Pharrell to work on the brand and I took Pharrell’s instructions straight to THG. He did the first logo the same day and that was basically how it worked it on that side: I would talk to Pharrell and Nigo about the aims and the concepts and translate those into something that THG could get an angle on… We would work on that together and slightly later in the story we were lucky to find Hishi who is a production whizz and understood all of our references. The three of us working together was such a pleasure – we could just have seemingly aimless conversations with the secret aim of tying together hundreds of obscure references and it somehow became reasonably sensible apparel that actually sold. It was like some noodling abstract jazz trio somehow being the production geniuses behind a semi-successful pop group.

Eventually it became clear that BBC, in that format, wouldn’t continue forever. We knew that we wanted to carry on working and so we had ever more directionless conversations. The flow of our thinking was: the failure of all available models of modernity, the disappointing reality and ubiquity of the internet, the frustration that the reality of Tokyo is nowhere near as good as the trailer for Enter The Void, the practical impossibility of originality. I read UBIK for the first time – I missed it when I was reading PKD as a youngster, as I was a literature student it was actually quite difficult for me to read that kind of thing back then. I suppose we realized that our dissatisfaction with the present state of things was like refusing to believe that the reality we assumed we were experiencing was really real, and perhaps we could just find an alternative somehow. I missed it but THG picked up Cav Empt from the book – from a tattoo that one of the characters has. I told some lawyer friends that my new brand would be called C.E for Caveat Emptor and they thought it was a fantastic name for a brand, but most other people have reacted with confusion."
