The UK always copies America
And OP what music are we owning? Pop music?
That's my point, we don't have to and it annoys me.
I think its a game of numbers unfortunately, there's more Americans to sell to, to people think that the way to go is to switchup their style. (isn't it cringey to think that almost every UK rapper back in the day felt they had to rap in a USA accent?, Tim (Yawn) Westwood still does).
We don't (own) any music scene in terms of sales but definitely in terms of creativity, the USA is a dessert in terms of creativity we will always be more creative.
In the past - ( People like Portishead, massive attack etc, James Blake (v recent i know), Remember Monie Love?, Soul II Soul) to name a few, yes, had american influences but also a v British feel that is/was different to anything that came out of the states...then somewhere it all changed! I know it's played out now but I love how people like roots manuva talked about British things in British accents. I know he's mainstream but i guarantee you that in a few years Labrinth will be a game changer in British pop music.
