I've been out of the Anime game for quite some time but.. here are my recommendations.

Hajime No Ippo - one of the better sport anime. it's a bit slow and lags at times but you start seeing the development of the character. Anime focus more on character development than story.

Berserk - Is a contender for best anime i've watched. If you like watching kingdom raids and blood and shit i.e. game of thrones, Spartacus type of anime.

Cowboy Bebop - You already know what's up... everyone talks about it.

Beck - Think of an anime based on people forming a rock band. It's more modern and westernized.

Gankutsuou - Great story and character development. Based on the book, The Count of Monte Cristo.

High School of the Dead - Not much story and character development. Guilty pleasure for those that like Zombies and tits.

Death Note - One of the most unique story told/anime I've watched. Arguably in top 5.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - Contender for best anime I've watched.  Pretty has all the package, action, comedy, storyline, character development.. etc.

Currently Hooked on:
Shingeki no Kyojin - Show is as addicting as if you touched Naruto and Bleach for the first time. Can't say for sure how this series will end.. but all signs points to good things.

What's good with Death Note? I've been meaning to watch the anime since I read the whole manga, is it still worth it to watch?

anime is most of the times more fun, but the reason i enjoy stuff like death note so much is because of the major mindfucks, so if i watch them again its half the fun

Death Note is how do I put it...mentally stimulating? There's so much mindplay but at the same time it's insane how it plays out. The animation style and music is also great, definitely recommend giving it a watch.

Watch the anime. However, there's 3 set of movies that's supposed to cover/sum up the anime series and maybe more? The movies aren't completely out yet (I think 2 of 3 are out so far). It's similar to the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series which covers the anime show.

Here's the listing of Beserk Movies
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk:_Golden_Age_Arc

Although the anime is out of date and the animation is not to today's standard.. the fact that this anime doesn't overkill the story with magic, ghosts, aliens, super powers.. It has that mythical, med evil, brood feel to it.  The anime doesn't cover the entire manga just an FYI.

finished death note recently, was sick. east of eden was good but its a short series. no.6 was good, but pretty sure the two protagonists were gay for eachother. watching fullmetal alchemist now.

be careful what you pretend to be

I started off watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and it got me fucking hooked, I was watching the OG FMA series on Netflix but they fucking took it off -_- so now I've been watching D. Gray-man and its pretty awesome too. I've also seen all the Studio Ghibli movies cause my gf has a dvd set with all of them and they're all pretty sweet. But so far nothing has compared to FMA brotherhood for me. Also I'm starting a small clothing line for fun and I'm gonna make a FMA tribute tee/jersey if you're interested in one pm me.

Also Kill La Kill is looking good, thats starting soon as well. Kill La Kill has the animator and other people who worked onn TTGL so it should be entertaining.

yeah thats what I meant haha sorry for the confusion. Just started reading the manga last week cool i was pissed though cause I really wanted to finish the first series on netflix just cause I like FMA alot and it was different than the brotherhood one, but its not one anymore and I was only on like episode 20 something.
