Here’s a bit of news sure to please anyone who grew up cheering braindead action movies from the '80s and '90s. Sylvester Stallone revealed today that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis will return for “substantial roles” in The Expendables 2.
How “substantial” these roles turn out to be won’t be clear until the film is released, but anything would be better than the single scene they shared in the first film that was prominently featured in the trailers and even on the poster.
This announcement should guarantee at least one incredible action scene between the aging stars involving a who-dropped-the-ball-on-Planet Hollywood argument that quickly turns into a massive shoot-out in a retirement home.
Ok, so that won’t happen, but with Sly stepping out of the director’s chair for this sequel in favor of Con Air’s (a comedy classic as far as I’m concerned) Simon West, hopefully the ludicrous action spectacle won’t be taken as seriously as the first chapter and it will feature some more winking humor.
After all, this franchise is pretty ridiculous and that’s why people are buying tickets. They may as well acknowledge that fact and have some fun. No one will show up to Expendables 2 for the story, I can guarantee that.
UPDATE: Chuck Norris got added to the movie.
