I usually always refer people to Insidious or Sinister, they're both pretty creepy.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is probably the scariest one I've ever seen, especially becaue it's actually based on a true story

more disturbing than scary
You can find the full movie on YouTube. It definitely was disturbing.

"The film opens with God Killing Himself: a man in rags slicing into his own belly as he spews dark fluid and oozes filth. Mother Earth emerges, or is born, from this excoriation and travels to a primeval forest. There she gives birth to Son of Earth-Flesh on Bone: a quivering man-child. The two are found by a tribe of faceless, druid-like figures dressed in rags, and though mother and child are at first revered, they are finally tortured, dismembered, and buried by the tribe. From their grave, life begins, and flora emerges from the wasteland. Filmed on black & white reversal film and then re-photographed onto a black & white negative, E. Elias Merhige's stark, grainy images of a squirming, oozing, mythical Creation are not easy to digest or to forget."
Yep.. this one just took the cake for me.

Still need to see the conjuring ^
Just watched this saturday, lots of suspense but it falls off hard midway and the ending is corny. Honestly it's very overrated.

I haven't seen The Conjuring but I'm hearing it's a cross between the PA/Exorcist and is scarier. I gotta watch it.

Sinister, The Conjuring, and The Strangers are three of the most solid ones in the last 5 years. Fuck insidious 2.

The only movie that truly scared me was the fourth kind. Because if aliens do exist and they do abduct you, you can't do anything about it. It scared me so much I couldn't go to sleep. But that's the only movie I felt truly scared.

Zooey Deschanel is the most perfect person on this earth and i love her more than anything and we are gettin married #2017!!!

noroi the curse was pretty good. especially that last scene, it was brutal.

I recommend
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Eye
3 extremes : part 1 and 2, ( each movie comprises of 3 short films, the one called "going home" really takes the cake for me, very very eerie)
Shutter
Phobia 2 (thai movie)
Event Horizon
I'm kind of a big fan of asian horror.
American horror just hasnt done it for me these past few years. they got suspenseful screamers, but nothing chilling or horrifying about them. too hollywoood for my taste.

the conjuring was actually pretty good though.
insidious 1 and 2 on the other hand was wack af.

Can anybody recommend a thriller/horror film where the main characters are smart?

It seems the formula for these films is stupid protagonists + vicious killer.

I recommend this anytime someone asks. To me, a movie like The Strangers is an actual scary movie, because it's so realistic.
