Honestly, not really. They've actually stuck very close to the books. They've skipped over a ton of back story and character development. In the book you find out a lot more about the mythology and history of the world and secondary characters like the different members of the Night's Watch, the Hound and his brother, and Theon Greyjoy. It's understandable why they skip over it...you'd spend 5 seasons on the first book otherwise. I'm surprised they've been able to fit in as much info and as many characters as they have.
