Built a coffee table. Thoughts?

May 12, 2012 @ 08:45:39
taking an 'industrial design materials and tools' class this semester and this was one of the projects. come up with your own life size coffee table & lamp. had one month from start to finish. took roughly the first week to draw everything out/come up with calculations, angles, and buy materials. then spent the rest of the time cutting, gluing, and sanding. this is my first time building anything so i thought it went quite well. each piece of wood has 4 different angles, some have 3.

inspiration came from Hellman-Chang. my concept was to infuse nature with modern.

Damn, that looks sweet. Where's the lamp?

Its an oil lamp right on top of the table. Made from tempered glass and wood. Forgot to add that the table itself has been coated twice with a satin clear coat.

Many thanks. I was thinking about posting it on etsy or something haha just to see what it'd be worth.

cool design, how tall is it though? might just be the angle, but it looks a bit high for a coffee table.
May 13, 2012 @ 00:42:00
L: 48"
W: 24"
H: 18.5"

average height for a coffee table i suppose.
May 13, 2012 @ 05:58:46
Wow how much did this cost to make ?
May 13, 2012 @ 08:16:08
approximately $150.

Yeah, its just glued together. I used an epoxy glue and finished it off with wood glue mixed with sawdust.

Yup, handmade. Didn't use too many tools other than table saw, panel saw, and a palm sander. Although, I did sand it by hand for the angled parts.

Thats cool as hell, how sturdy is it?
July 04, 2012 @ 03:52:41
its pretty sturdy for what i've been able to put on top of it. i mean, its a coffee table so not much else goes on top but reading material and a couple laptops.

You did a good job man. The most I've ever built was a candle box type thing for a class in Jr high school.
