Are Levis STF 501's "Raw" denim? If so, can anyone help me understand why most of the other Raw denim jeans, people say to size down on but STF you size up on?

Is STF the same raw denim as others? I mean not literally the EXACT same, but the same qualities?

Just trying to understand more of the difference.
I'll try to help you out.
First, look at the definition for raw denim.
Then, look up difference between Sanforized, and Unsanforized fabric.
Lastly, do some research on tagged sizing, and vanity sizing.
That should answer all your questions.

Those are a few vocabulary that's essential to anyone interested in denim.

Thanks for the response Slap. I know what all of those terms mean. So are you saying that most of the non Levi Raw denims are sanforized and the STF's are not? Or? Knowing those terms does not really tell me.
Are you saying many of the more expensive raw denims are vanity fit?

Please elaborate?

Thanks

yo, i just copped me some levis 508s - regular fit tapered "best of red tab". got the from a sale rack and didnt really find much info online about them.

here they are

they feel stiff and look raw, but are they raw? or are they rigid? do this bitches fade well? do they need a soak?

thanks!
should be raw but definitely not selvedged so it will take more wears for fading to show. i have a pair and ive been wearing them for a year before i started noticing some real fades. havent washed them yet

selvedge has nothing to do with fading. Levi's rigid is pretty much the same as raw. No need for a soak so just wear them

Hey guys,
Thought I would share some progress of my Levi's Yorks. This is a cut I have not seen a lot but I got it for cheap this past summer. It is a skinny cut from the Selvedge Collection. The fades are coming along slowly but the fit is great.

This is after 7 months. No washes (4/20/2013):

At that price, Was it worth it or should I just go for unbrandeds?

There is a store in the Meatpacking District which definitely does and I think the SoHo one does as well. Not so sure about the rest.

@Electrik Heat, I'm sure you can find them for even less. When I went back to Nordstrom, they were marked down even lower razz
In terms of quality, I actually prefer Unbrandeds over Levis. I'm not sure why, but my Levi's crotch blew out in 2-3 months. UB's are holding up quite fine.

I just got the STF 501. The fit on me is great but I just hate the leg opening. They seem so baggy and big and they overlap my sneakers. Has anybody taken them to the tailor to get them tapered? How did it turn out?

I also hate big leg opening on the 1966 501s, I would be curious to see if anyone has had success tapering. I've been too nervous to trust it with such expensive denim.
