toronto prices are rape. if i bought my equipment here, i'd be spending an extra 300-500 dollars for the exact same thing online or in the states. i'd suggest ordering online. i depend on musiciansfriend.com and kpodj

depending what you want to get into there's different mixers. i chose to go with the rane ttm-56 cause i wanna battle and it's decent for mixing, but once again its mainly for scratching. it doesn't break like others do because the faders are magnetic.

if you wanna go vinyl, i'd suggest technics. some of them are cheaper now, the older versions. the mk5 and the m5g are a bit newer. i've got the mk5 and that's really all you need because there's not much of a difference between them. but there are other choices like spinning with cds(but i can't see hip-hop without vinyl)

the needle, there's different types depending on what you're gona do, just do some research on styluses and shit.

p.s. look into serato, it's probably the easiest way to start doing gigs and get yourself some money quicker. gigs = fly gear, so it all works out.

hope it helped.

i dunno
its weird
i'll respect a DJ that uses Serato, but not an Ipod DJ
i can't explain it

just like i despise cover bands cause they make money off other people's music
yet DJ's do the exact same thing, but i have no beef w/ them

buy your gear online from the states, you save alot.

here's my set up.
2 x Technics SL-1210MK5
2 x Shure M44-7
1 x Rane TTM-57SL

the ttm 56 is the standard of the industry. i use a pioneer 909 at present but theres so many choices now. i would use a ttm 57 with ssl built in if the build quality was the same as the ttm 56, but alas i went thru 2 that rane sent me with bad buttons and leaky faders, bad enuff that i don't trust it. the mackie d2 looks promising too.

i own a pmc06... probably my favourite mixer to scratch on, the faders are siick. its also about 4 inches slimmer than your average battle mixer which i like cuz thers more room on the table and it just makes beat jugglin easier. its good not only for scratchin but mixing too, since you can adjust the fader curve. Its functions are pretty basic though, eq isnt that great, and there's no mic input. still i recommend it for the bedroom dj

When i have to do gigs i bust out my ttm56 :D
