The new Porsche 911 Carrera: Tradition meets modernity
World premiere at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show

Stuttgart. At 48, the Porsche 911 Carrera is younger than ever: The completely redesigned generation of the sports car icon is stepping into the limelight with its flat, stretched silhouette, exciting contours and precisely designed details, yet from the very first glance it remains unmistakably a 911. True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language with its tendons and muscles exudes power and elegance.

The 100 millimetre (~ 3.9 inches) longer wheelbase and reduced height combined with the up to 20-inch wheels underpin the athletic appearance. At the same time, the typical sports car compact exterior dimensions were retained. Seen from the front, the eye is drawn to the 911

you know when i saw the spy photos i couldn't stand it. i felt the 911 was too stretched and looked like more of a grand tourer instead of a sports car

upon seeing it unmasked, i take back everything i've ever said. looks absolutely incredible.

my only complaint is this.

WHY IS PORSCHE STILL RAPING ITS CUSTOMERS FOR PADDLE SHIFTERS? THESE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN AN $85000+ CAR

yeah that is one of my 2 complaints. I'm a manual guy but I think I would take a S in PDK and use it as the best daily driver ever made. My other complaint is there is way too much badging on the rear but deleting some or all of it is supposed to be an option (hopefully no cost).

judging from past 911's, the badge delete will definitely be no cost. i'm anxious to see what reviewers think of the 7 speed manual.

I would take both. The 7 Speed Manual is based off the PDK gearbox but is geared more like a 6 speed transmission (with an extra gear for highway cruising efficiency instead of top speed).

The 991 is also going to have some new models. A true targa where the roof is removable and has an aluminum B pillar like the old targas. A budget clubsport model (think GT3 with a Carrera engine, fuck yeah). And a normal production (not limited edition) speedster which will be a removable manual roof version of the clubsport. All 3 of those sound awesome. The clubsport is going to be what the GTS should have been.

I am a huge fan of Porsche's and their 911's.

I think the new design is pretty nice. The new sleek roof line definitely makes all the difference.
Although in my opinion, the front end resembles it's predecessor/997 a little too much.
I am also not a fan of the center console of the 991. The ring time on the S model is pretty astonishing though.

Although the 993 remains my favorite 911 of all time.

I'm not used to the look of it yet but the gear shift/gear selector position is PERFECT. way better than any prior generation, should be way more fun to shift gears now.

they took out most of the plastic as full leather interior is standard now. the interior is now panamera quality as porsche wanted a higher quality, more luxurious interior than the audi r8, maserati gran turismo, bentley continental gt and aston martin db9.

Porsche has always done this. Porsches are a severely overrated, overpriced car line. They don't innovat, are steps back in design, and frankly, they don't give a shit, either. Porsche is living off of it's logo from the 80's.

This is supposed to be their staple car, $100k probably and the dash looks like this?

I don't want a dash that is straight out of a fucking 90's Chevy Suburban. Pathetic. Frankly, I put Porsche in the entry level of luxury with Cadillac and BMW (or barely Audi). Definitely not a Aston, Ferrari, or Maserati by any means.

This is just the surface of the disdain for Porsche and their cheapness of design...

yeah those are are way nicer than the 911s. and definitely more visible to see the information you need. aston martin and maserati are innovating so much more than porsche. the new maserati suv is going to be built on the grand cherokee platform and have a hemi. dat luxury. and aston martin's new car the virage is such a leap forward than the other models in its line.

so radically different than its predecessors

porsche only invented the first electric hub motor, the first gasoline-electric hybrid car, the first four wheel drive car and the first mid-engined race car. fuck them and their 5 ring dash that they still use because that is what car enthusiasts want in a car.

i dare you to sit in one and say that with a straight face. their ability to constantly evolve and stay on top is unparalleled. 50 years and the same basics remain while remaining one of the most sought after and recognizable sports cars of all time.

aston martin is still using interior bits from volvo

maserati is a luxury car that couldn't keep up with a base carrera in the twists

ferrari is double the price

a v12 vantage is definitely a more capable car than the carrera, but im sure the 991 gt3 will run circles around it.

the gt3 is supposed to release spring 2012 and the turbo is supposed to release fall 2012 even though they have been developing it side by side with the carrera. their reasoning is they want it to destroy the gtr. rumors of the current ring time on the turbo prototype are 10 seconds faster around the ring than the gtr.
