interesting comparison. it always amazes me how the europeans are so superior in producing more horsepower per liter. i'd expect BMW to put their stamp down and improve on the 4.0 liter engine before the next gen M3 comes out though.

i doubt they'll make any significant changes to the motor before the next one comes out. Also, word on the street is that the next M3 will be a turbo inline 6

heard about that too, every engine so far has been a major improvement over the older one and not much to be done further with the current V8, so turbo makes sense. maybe nothing major, but i can definitely see BMW squeezing out more horses by tweaking components before the new one, even if its just a ploy just to say the newer models are a marked improvement over older ones

turbo inline 6 is fail. bmw needs to stay true to at least the m3's heritage (since the m5 and m6 are doomed to FI) and continue with high revving NA engines.

wow. you fail. it's a status car? a better argument could've been that it's more involving, more enjoyable to drive, and more refined than the mustang, justifying the extra $30k.

a twin turbo six would definitely boost the power to weight ratio and handling, but i think your right about sticking with NA's. leave the turbo's to Porche

also, it seems the e92 M3 is the last time the sedan will be available.

back to the comparison though... stick a 7sp dual clutch in the M3 and i guarantee the tenth of a second will increase

good point on the dual clutch, though that's not a fair battle.

I agree with the N/A thing, Audi and Porsche both use the turbos, hell even Mercedes has forced induction. Shitty though I really wanted to get a new M3 but after seeing this that $25k you'd save with the mustang would be more than enough to mod it to spank the M3 =[

idk man, the new single turbo n55 engine makes full torque at something ridiculous like 1250 rpm. Also, turbos just seem to be the way BMW is headed. The only N/A ///M car right now is the M3. I do kinda agree that the ///M division should stick to its roots and stay N/A (not to mention that the x5m and x6m should never have been made) but with all these mpg requirements i understand why they are going the DI forced induction route.
