'11 M3 vs '13 RS5 vs '11 CTS-V

pretty interesting read comparing perennial heavyweight M3 against the tech-born RS5 and the new look Caddy. didn't really want to start a thread just for this, but nowhere really to put it. not really surprised that they ranked the BMW first (MT staff are a notorious for their Bavaria love), but the CTS-V is makin a big splash. i think they should have put the C-63 and a corvette in there too though.

c&d just did the same comparo with the same results. i was a little annoyed at the fact that they fitted the caddy with an auto in both tests, as it probably would've taken second, if not first, if equipped with a manual trans.

you're probably right, but i think dual clutch trannies will be the standard soon for performance coupes. went to the C&D site but all i found was a comparo among the a6, 535, and M37. i also saw the photo of the Mercedes C class coupe too. looks like they are finally gonna crash the party.

It will but there will always be people who want their pure manuals back. When the e60 m5 came out they were only available in smg until enough complaints were received for a manual transmission option.

that's because the feeling of driving a true manual can never be replaced, no hate to you guys. i had a gti with a dual clutch trans and they're fun but not quite as fun as rowing your own gears.

i honestly don't think the dual clutches will become the standard, at least for most enthusiasts. for instance, the mkiv r32 sold like hotcakes but many mkv r32s sat in showrooms for over a year because they were only available in dsg. you see many 6 speed e46 m3's going for more than their smg counterparts because most enthusiasts desire the manual as well.

Well im glad I didn't get a stick, I can still shift if I want but do not have to. But a lot of higher end cars are coming with dual clutches standard rather than manual but still having manual as an option rather than the other way around. I'm not saying manuals are disappearing because they're definitely not but for a lot of people a dual clutch makes more sense to have rather than a manual. However when I end up getting a lamborghini etc down the road Im sure ill get a manual &)

As for the more people prefer manual over smg on the e46's I think it's more because high mileage smg's are more likely to need to be replaced entirely due to hydraulic pump failures etc. Not too many e36 M's floating around have less than 50k on them and most have been modded abused etc.

yeah i can understand for a commuter if you're not obsessed with driving then the automanual works. when i'm older my DD will most likely be an auto.

a lot of the higher end cars are owned by people that use their cars as status symbols, not something to really drive and enjoy. i can understand going dct/pdk/whatever in something like a 430 scuderia that's going to be used mostly for track use so you want the best time possible, but otherwise manual is far more enjoyable.

haha naw my dad is supposed to get one for me as a graduation present from med school, the only reason why I said that. I doubt I will actually get It, I'll probably take the money and invest it. If anything i'll probably get a porsche.
