ideas? A few cars that came to mind were the e36 m3, b5 s4, ap1 s2000, maybe a first gen boxster? (laugh all you want, they're great cars)

definitely looking to hear from canvas08 and main event on this one

I love those cars, especially with the ultra sport package, but for 10k it'd be a fairly high mileage one and the 1.8t isn't the world's most reliable engine from what I've read

I have a 3.0 quattro and I see them going for 11-12k on decent mileage. mines got 70k and still runs great.

Can't go wrong with any of the choices you put up... I however wouldn't go with the S2k unless it's going to be a weekend car. S2k's are nice but in reality they are impractical for a DD...they are exactly the most roomy/comfortable...the Suspension isn't forgiving at all and can give off a rough ride. And cargo room isn't by much...

Yeah I know those cars are impractical and unforgiving. Only problem is I test drove one a while back and now I'm in love

Amb I'll be sure to check out the 3.0

despite their appearance they can get pretty nasty on the autox course.

but yeah if you want a manual they arent the car for you.

i have actually autocrossed boxsters before and they are pretty fun. its not a car i would purchase for myself but they are probably the most fun you can have in an autocross build in your budget.

yeah they're a little on the feminine side (as are the s2k's) but the driving experience can't be beat. the only thing that concerns me about the porsche is the maintenance/repair costs

A solid vote for the E36 M3, for the money, make sure you're getting one with an S52.

S2K's with a good coilover and wheel setup make that feminine look go away.

Thanks man, suspension is probably the first thing I'd focus on when it comes to any of these cars. What's wrong with the s50? I planned on going with the latest year possible anyways but it'd be tough to pass on an avus blue

If i had that budget id get a clean e30. i know its alot older than most of the cars that you had in mind but, with 10k you can get a pretty nice swapped e30. they are light and handle like they are on rails. thats what i would do.

if not i'd check for a nice e36 M3/4/5, even i coupe but i like the 4drs personally.

The S52 is a 3.2L, while the S50 is only a 3.0L, giving it a bit more torque down low. The S2000 would be my personal choice, but it is likely the harshest riding and least practical of the group. I like the Boxster, but the ones in your price range will probably only have the 2.5L engine, leaving it a bit underpowered. I like the B5 S4 quite a bit, driven one hard several times, but it is a bit on the heavy side (though I believe it is the most powerful of the group). The E36 M3 is also awesome, quite a bit lighter than the S4 and it has a silky smooth inline 6 (again try for a 1996+ with the S52).

The best combination of autocross performance and practicality is probably gonna have to be the M3. Personally, I'd say fuck being practical and get the S2000 because it is an awesome driving experience.

As far as suggestions go, you could probably find an early WRX (not STI) in that price range as well. I've also seen early 350Z's in the 11K-12K range. RX8's are renowned for their handling prowess and can be found right around your price range as well.

Cake eater I love e30s but for some reason swaps scare me. Any car I buy has gotta be stock or damn close to it

main event, if I went for a boxster it'd definitely be a 2000 and up with the 2.7, the 2.5's have quite a few problems from what I've read. The s2k is definitely my first choice but since the parents are helping with insurance they might not be too keen on the idea (fingers crossed). The wrx's and 03 350z's are awesome cars but both are known to have tranny issues. I've also heard horror stories about the rx-8s engine. Have you read on them at all?

I wasn't aware of the 350Z's tranny issues though after a google I've heard they do wear out quickly. As far as the RX8's engine, for some reason Mazda recommends a lighter weight oil in the US only and it doesn't protect the engine as well as the heavier weight oil it recommends every where else. No one seems to be sure of why this is but I've heard many RX8 owners switched over to the heavier oil and have had no problems at all supposedly all the way up to 200,000+ miles. With WRX transmissions I've heard various stories, some failures stemming from abuse on hard AWD launches and some just failing for no apparent reason. Overall, I'd still recommend the S2000 or M3 over the rest, though an RX8 with the heavier weight oil also sounds appealing.

I don't know how the hell I ended up here.

But I've driven far more than my fair share of cars.

It really does come down to what you want to drive. Yes Out of all the cars I see you have listed I'd say B5 S4. Go to arizona pick one up with 4X,XXX Miles on it for 11,000?

But the problem with that is. 2.7TT parts are very expensive.

AP1 S2000's are fucking fun, when you're above 7000rpm. AP2's can lick my asshole. I liked revving it out to 11k(no recommended btw)

Biggest problem ever with the S2000. You're going to blow up your rear diff when you lower it. And thats gonna cause you a lot of money and pain.

M3 I don't really have anything against. Besides the fact that a lot of doucebags drive them hahaha. BMW is a great company makes some great cars.

I'd suggest the A4 though I have an older one. Love it to death. Just recently put the S4 Brakes on it. The quattro system is golden. All mechanical center differential not having to worry about wear and tearing and blowing it up.

If you heard the 1.8t is a bad engine you're hearing things too.

Mines at 190k Miles and holding strong. Stock block can put out a good 350whp pretty reliably.

But ya go test drive shit see what you like.

I'm in the same situation right now as you are I've been looking for a someday track car under 15k and the s2000 is getting to be my choice.

To the topic:

I would go with the ap1 because its not very high maintenance and is an all around more raw car.
Euro cars are good but are costly down the road.
As for the rx-8, try to stay away if its going to be your dd.

hahaha no thanks

gonna hold off for a while, dad's letting me just dd his cts-v until i absolutely need a car (which i certainly don't mind cool), which will probably be late summer. i wish i could just steal the cad instead, shit is so dope (could use a short shifter though, the gearbox isn't the smoothest in the world)
