I found a bmw 740il 1999 E38
fully loaded
116,000 miles
everything is original
no dent's/scratches/etc.
he want's $6,000 for it.
Is it a good car overall or a problem car?

id say with those miles its hit or miss. just make sure you have all papers for work done to it. and be prepared to pay for labor if you cant do it yourself

Even though its a 6 grand car, this car was probably 60-70k new. So you will be paying for maintenance on a 70k car. If i were you, (im assuming you're a young college kid) id just get a civic or save up some more money and get a newer bmw with less miles.

If you can work on cars yourself or have a good connection who knows how to work on BMWs, then go for it. Im warning you though, these cars are solid but when something breaks you will pay. Oh and compared to a 3er, this is a rare car so replacement parts may be hard to find, i dont think they still stock e38 stuff at the dealership.

I get you,
it is between this or an 99 civic si with only 83k on it for the same price.
My dad is a mechanic/tech. they work on all genre of cars at his shop.
He was telling me the same that it will be expensive to do maintenance and etc.

well lets say your timing chain snaps thats gonna put you out about 2k for that price you can buy a nice k20 and start modding it. Just take the civic

if you maintain it proper you'll never have to worry about a timing chain snapping. but i guess if you don't wanna have a car you gotta take care of, buy a honda

Get an inspection done at an independent shop that specializes in euro cars. If it passes, get it.

Ps, timing chains don't snap. unless there's something REALLY wrong with your car.

Before you buy any used car you should take it over to a mechanic and have them look the car completely over and do a compression test. BMW's are made to last and 110k miles isn't much, I do agree maintenance will probably be more on a BMW over a Honda. K20 swap is going to cost way more then 2g's. Depending on how much work you do you're self a full k20 swap will run about 4k. With that money you can buy a factory k20 car. Like a RSX in the end if possible I'd try to save a little more and buy something else.

i'd def go with a beemer, but get like an e36 (around 1997 or so) 3 series or something. theres parts out the ass for those cars and you will love it so much more than a damn civic.

plus have fun gettin your civic jacked if u modify it basically in any way
