Does horsepower mean everything?

so i was doing some research on a few cars that my classmates have. an 05 sti has around 220 horses stock and a four cylinder engine. my eclipse gt has 268 horses, a 6 cylinder engine and is front wheel drive. i get a lot of shit for my car for obvious reasons, and the only aspect of my car that gets some respect is the stock horsepower. so i just wanna know if my car can beat the sti on the quarter mile?

Lulz.... an STI makes 300 stock on that flat four BOXER motor bud.
The WRX is the one that makes around 220
Even then, doesnt the Eclipse only make 210 max stock? A WRX will even take you.

Moving on, you'll get eaten. I'm assuming you've got the newer Eclipse with the MIVEC V6 in it? If so, you've got a whole 'lot of catching up to do. That's a heavy car.

Traction, Torque and vehicle weight means the most....and also driver means a ton if the car you own is on the same level as the one you are racing.........In your case you aren't.

You will lose unless your boy mishifts or his car is a POS

I think the 03 IS300 will be a close race.
But honestly I think Eclipses are lame and chick cars lol, no offense.

The IS300 would be a close race, but I give it a slight edge and it might come down to driver skill. An STI would destroy you, assuming the driver isn't retarded.

Not to mention your FWD which means your not even getting all the power to your wheels... there is a huge difference from what you make at the crank and what ends up at the wheels. You could probably take him off the line if he doesn't know how to launch but he'll smoke your as midway through 2nd gear even if he does a bad launch. Like Citizen said though Torque is where its at...

unlike many kids here, i dont live with much money. i can't just point at a car i want and have it. if that was the case i would be in an evo or sti right now. i was at a used car auction and my mom gave me two rules. no manual and must be affordable. the best car that fit those limitations was the eclipse. so i really didn't have too many options. it has very low mileage so chances of any mechanical problems were low. that's why i ended up with a freaking eclipse. i was also on my winter break during my college years and needed a car right away. and no, i wouldn't have gotten a civic i hate those things.

how much did you pay? i'm gonna assume low teens

in that case, you had plenty of better options, including a preowned rx-8, 350z, gti, civic si, mach 1, and many other cars

in fact, i would actually take a civic over an eclipse

its reliable, practical, gets good gas mileage, and doesnt scream "LOOK AT ME. I THOUGHT I WAS BUYING A SPORTSCAR BUT REALLY I BOUGHT A BLOATED PIECE OF SHIT"

PLus. Were your torque is placed on what powerbands(range of RPM) makes a difference. YOu want it start at the RPM when you downshift. The fastest drag racer has a Torque graph which is very straight i believe.
He could have 500 PEAK horsepower but it could take him 1 minute to get there. And you can have 200 HP and it could take you 1 second to get there. Who will win in a 1.4 mile race?

If you want a Subaru go look on nasioc.com and check the regional classifieds. There are a shit load of cars you can find right now around that price range. I'd get a 06 wagon....those are dope.

i think an 04/05 wrx with an older owner would be a great car schao. just make sure you're not buying off a young guy, the transmissions are an issue on those cars, especially when ragged on.

^ha. that's funny cause an 05 wrx was the first car i test drove. i was about to buy it for 15 grand but it had a salvage title and my mechanic gave a huge WTF when he looked under the hood so i didn't buy it. i guess it's just fate that i must own a wrx since it's been brought up so much to me. in the near future..

yeah don't buy anything salvaged or modified, especially with those cars. yes there's an off chance that you find someone who modified it yet didnt thrash it and knew what they were doing, but that's typically not the case

Please learn more about cars before you buy another, especially if you get an Evo or STi.
By the way, I bought a 2003 Evo with 50k miles for 8500 + my eclipse gsx.

And even if the owner of the STi didn't know how to launch, he would still beat you off of the line and smoke you to the finish. They are low 13 second cars out of the box. Your eclipse would pull a high 15 to low 16.

or on the motor?
If on the motor you'll really only going to be getting about 230-240 hp.
Horse power isn't shit if you don't have the right tire's, weight, body, etc.
Some Roll's Royce have over 500 hp, you don't see them going over 180^.
Subaru will eat it.
