I have looked into the speed triple, I assume they are very similar? Only problem is, I don't see many for sale. So the Monster and the speed/street triple are pretty similar? I did also check out the Kawasaki Z1000

I wouldn't say extremely similar from what I read and saw in comparison vids is the monster has handling and predictability on its side. The triumph has power. If I could pick up another bike I would go for the triumph. Either way both bikes are dope.

one of the guys we went riding with on sunday had a 2011 bmw i think. thing was sexy.

I'm interested, how old are you lot looking to go straight 600?
Personally I think that's far too much power for a first bike.
What are the rules over there in the us, as in what do you need to ride a 600? And what's insurance like.

And why is everybody obsessed with 1000 surely a nice 600 is quick enough?

anything above 150cc you need a motorcycle license either m1 or m2 for strictly scooter. no difference between a 250cc 600cc or 1000cc in the laws eyes.
insurance is a lot more for bikes once you increase the CCs tho. can't remember what i pay exactly but it isn't anything outrageous for a 600cc

i think most people obsessed with a 1000cc are the ones that have never ridden. i have two guys at work, 1 with a 2003 r1 and another with a 06 cbr1000rr and they both say they can't ever really use the power. if you twist the throttle you start power wheeling all the time. the guy with the r1 says he gets around 35mpg, fuck that shit l0l thats one of the main reasons i'm ok with a 600cc. i would like the higher CCs for whenever i do some twoup riding but my 600 is better then my 250 ninja in that category as is

can still keep up with the literbikes in the twisties anyways

Yeah, makes sense just surprised to see so many people going straight too 600 but I'm guessing they aren't all 20year old students like me.
I pay around £850 for a 125 looking to go naked 500 at the end of this year then 600 super sport when I can afford it.

Mpg on 1000 is stupid if you're looking to commute its pointless and you're right, a good rider on a 600 will be ridiculously quick

I started on a beat up 250. Drove it for a couple of months and then bought my current bike yzf600r. I think it's dumb how people rag on you if you have a 250 or even a 600 sometimes. I've been thinking about picking up another ninja 250 and trying to make a street fighter since I m
Miss getting 70mpg. I would never tell anyone to start on a 600 or 650. I think even a 500 would be difficult mainly since size differences. I feel like I can handle a big bike now mine weights close to 500 wet. I see so many 1000cc with barely any miles on craigslist all the time from people buying them and being afraid to ride them

^^^^ newer 1000s get better gas mileage than 35mpg or at least they should. A guy at my work has a hayabusa and he gets 47mpg beating on it.

I might end up getting a 600rr again but I'm still trying to find a good deal on the s1000rr, I found a good deal on the Aprilia RSV4 Factory but I'm not sure if the bike is for me since I can't have a passenger on it.

But on topic with the whole bike size, you should get what you're comfortable with. If you have a friend with a 600 and they'll let you ride it, try it out and if its too much go down to a 250

When I had my 600 I was 20. The first bike I rode/learned on was my buddy's 1000 and honestly really didn't like it. I then bought my 600, got some seat time, and then even after that still preferred my 600 over his 1000. It's just a whole different feeling through turns and what not when riding a 600 over a 1000.

I think everyone's attitude with the whole 1000 >>> 600 thing is just people trying to compare dick sizes.

for the majority of bikes
600s > 1000s in turning/handling
1000s > 600s in speed

but you can always make a 1000 handle better and you can always make a 600 faster

A nigga can't do shit out here without credit. I need to take out a loan for my bike already mannn.
I've been back and forth debating between starting off on a little Ninjette or DRZ400sm. The DRZ usually wins but a used one would run me about a stack more than the 250. If I could only find somewhere to get a loan out tho. Any ideas? I have a decent little down payment saved for the loan, but parents won't even cosign a bike for me .__.

Some 1000's have decent mpg, depends how you ride them.
A 600rr is the bike I'm hoping to own one day, love them. R6's are nice but stupidly popular over here but if they are better for acceleration then I'd consider one ( still dreaming ) I'm not bothered about top speed just handling and acceleration. Oh, and the Daytona 675 seems rather nice and the new mv Augusta, please tell me you've seen that?

I'm not a fan of aprilla's some look pretty nice but apparently not the best for quality, the BMW looks amazing.
I can't wait to be riding bigger bikes

Bobbers are nice.
What's the best way to learn about the mechanical side of bikes? I really want to learn stuff so I maintain my bike myself and also for when I want to work on my bikes in the future?
Simple stuff to start with like filter change, brake pads and so on, to then cleaning carbs, checking valves and stuff and changing indicators and exhausts then one day I'll learn about adjust some serious stuff like torque.

I would say buy an older beat up bike with barely any fairings. Makes it a lot easier cause you can see everything without having to deal with too many electronics. For me I just learned by doing it. Picked up a pitbull front and rear stand and got to work taking everything off. I just did a bunch of maintenance on my bike like new chain, sprockets, plugs, filters and coolant flush.

Get a rear stand and just start going at it. just make sure you give yourself extra time andanother ride in case something happens. I have a hard cover book about my bike and www.yzf600r.com if your bike has a website look at somediys and tutorials a couple of times then start working on it. Maybe even YouTube videos if your bike has a big following

My Monster S4:

Built that thing back in 2006.

Then sold it to this guy not too long ago:

If it's your first bike, get a beater. My suggestions:
-Honda Hawk GT
-Suzuki SV650
-Honda 599

They may not be the best looking bikes out there, BUT they're light, easy to throw around, and good to learn on.
I wouldn't go for a Monster as a first bike for maintenance costs. If your income allows, then go for it. Whichever bike you choose, ride safely.
