So I'm looking into photography and I don't really know much about dslr, slr, etc. I just want to start out with a simple camera that's about mediocre in price range also not extremely confusing to use.

A lot of people have suggested Nikon D40 on the other threads, but I'm not sure if its the one for me.

Any suggestions? sad

why aren't you sure if the d40 is the right one for you?
from what you've told me it seems perfect.

are you totally sure youd like a SLR?? If not Id go with a nice point and shoot that has pretty good features. Canon's g10 might now be a bad buy or the Panasonic LX-3. Both are good choices and you can still add lens adaptors to either one. Anyway I hope that helps.

You don't HAVE to have a DSLR to shoot nice photos. Of course, if the hobby grows on you and you enjoy it a lot you will probably move towards it, but at the time being you could consider the more 'advanced' point and shoots...

If I were you, I would look into a Canon G9/G10, Sigma DP1/DP2, Ricoh GR/GR2, etc. I'm pretty sure you can get the Canon for under 500, not sure about the others though (because of availability). They will offer you lots of freedom with your pictures and aren't bulky, so you could just put it in your bag if you want. Image Quality shouldn't be a problem with these either...

If you really wanna get a DSLR, the D40 isn't a bad choice for its price, but you could also look at the Canon XTi/XT which are around the same price and have the autofocus motor built into the body...

Right now I got a Panasonic FZ-18 and its in between a PnS and a full DSLR. I love this camera, I have total control over the aperture and speed, while not having to change the lens everytime.

Ahh, thing is I might be minoring in photography with a communication major. I've been doing some research on the D40 as well as the Canon cams. I just don't know which to go for, I like both of them a lot. Though I should look into those p&s cams you suggested. Google ftw.

Thanks for the suggestions man!
