hey guys i'm new here, and i'm planning to get my first slr. I have been saving up money to buy a new slr, i prefer canon and i was wondering if canon 40d is the right choose for a beginner in photography? and if i do buy the 40d, what kind of lenses should i buy?

Get a Canon Rebel XTI first. Then when you get better at photography, upgrade. As for lenses, you can use the kit lens it comes with and also buy a 50mm f/1.8 for starters.

get a 20d, i know i always say this but it's the same price as a used xti these days and will get you the build quality of a 40d for about $400-450 in good used condition. the whole rebel series is just plastic crap, and while the sensor may be nice the rest of the camera makes me mad.

or, you can go to any ritz camera store and get a brand new 30d for $700 out the door (surprising, but nice on the wallet).

then you'll have more money for the lens fetish you're about to walk headfirst into.

i checked costco.com and the 40d is $970 plus a 2g memory card. is $270 more worthy to just get the 40d instead of the 30d?

Not to be a broken record or anything, but don't buy anywhere other than Adorama, B&H or Ritz.

50D isn't the replacement, more of a sister model

so prices won't go down that much, and they'll only drop once the 50D settles in the market.
