photomatrix

You could also use PS for HDR but I think photomatrix is a better HDR program.

I'll triple that: Photomatix Pro

I'm not sure if CS3 will allow you to, but with Photomatix Pro, you can use just one RAW image instead of differently exposed JPEGS. And, at least on my comp, it renders faster.

Yeah, photomatix is good.
..but if you wanna use PS, u gotta d/L>install the tone-mapping plug-in.

Very nice choice cool

I'm planning on getting my first DSLR in the next year (i'm currently
in a photography class using film) and am looking at the Canon XTi,
Nikon D40 or D40x (I love the D40x but heard that you can only use
certain lenses on it razz)

Anyways I was wondering what you used because the picture quality
is incredible in all your shots. Do you alter them at all?

Oh and about the D40/X--you can only use lenses that are AF-S [if you want them to AUTO FOCUS, that is] but you can still use older lenses but you have to use manual focus, as most old nikkor/x lenses don't have built in motors.

I usually just alter color balance in PS
