got my first dslr

a canon 40D...can anyone recommend a good all around lens for a newbie under $500.00

i plan on taking pics of people/scenery for now

a great lens in general. try sigma 30mm f/1.4. you can find some for $400. I shoot with a canon efs 17-85 f/4 with image stabilizer which runs for about $400. great for general shooting, but not the best when shooting in low light with the 7d. it would also be great to know how your camera functions. what could be a con for me could be a pro for you.

Pick up a "nifty 50". Canon 50mm 1.8 II lens, estimated price around $100 or less.

Extremely sharp, lightweight lens that is extremely useful for portrait shooting. Might not do so well with scenery but you will be impressed how well this cheap lens can do for people pictures. It's a lens that even pros carry around. I use to use it with my 40D setup and it was excellent.

Pros
Cheaper / Half the price of a 7D
Better entry level cam than what Nikon is offering

Cons
Plastic body
not weatherproof
Single Digic IV Processor

I have a 7D and have been really pleased with the quality of images and videos. Your choice in camera really depends on what you are doing. Being able to do continuous shooting at 8fps is a huge difference to some. If you are an entry level photographer, it is a no brainer to start off with this and then move up to a pro camera later.

Oh...I was looking to buy a T1i but since the T2i is coming out should I just wait for that?

if the time ever comes that youre actually doing work that warrants 16 megapixels and 100k iso ratings, you'll already be able to afford it.

I'm looking to buy a Sigma Lens for my D60. 18-50mm f/2.8 HSM. It's like the stock lens that comes with the D60 kit but its faster.

Just wondering ppl's experience with Sigma. Thanks.

Hey, I'd recommend the Yongnuo Wireless Remote Control RF-602. They're from China and you can only get them form ebay, but they're reliable. The service from the company is solid too. Here's an entire thread dedicated for them.
