I just purchased a lens for my D40 the other day. Whenever I attach it the camera can't detect that it's attached. Anyone know anything about this?

What lens (I don't use a Nikon, but Nikon owners might be able to help).

Try cleaning the contacts.

what's a good lens for my nikon d40? i'm planning to do some far shots, and some close up shots too. IE: photoshoots and the sunset. what would be a good upgrade from my 50mm 2.8 mf lens?

something relatively long with a fast aperture. something like f2.8 should be decent.

What about the 70-200 2.8? are they any good? 24-70 seems liek it'll come slightly short of the zoom i need especially when taking shots from teh stands.

24-70 might fall short sometimes but you have a 1.6 sensor so ionno. the 70-200 will be really good too but it costs so goddamm much.

A 24-70mm on a FF is more than enough if you're actually on deck during the meet. A 70-200 would be better in your case since you're in the stands. Watch out for large windows, newer pools tend to have large windows that blow out highlights and cause terrible glare across the water's surface.

The 17-85mm is great on the 50d, I'm selling it too, if you're interested, heh.

im considering getting a d40 but i dont wanna get a $400 camera just to spend 300 more on a lense so it can auto focus. i mean is the inabilty to autofocus THAT big of a deal? or could i just deal with it?

Planning to get into event style photography (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries)
Using a Nikon D50, thinking of getting a 35mm? Good idea?

I own 50mm f1.8 and 55-200mm f4-5.6 and the crappy 18-55
Opinions? Suggestions? Experience at events?
Thanks!

you do know that most quality lenses will run 300+. you can always just use a kit lens and do just fine, i don't see why you HAVE to spend another 300. the auto-focus problem was a major issue for awhile but many 3rd party manufacturers are starting to put out lenses with AF built into the lens (Tamron XRii, Sigma has one too i believe) to accommodate for the popularity of the lower level Nikon DSLR's that don't include the AF motor within the camera.

what if i get just a d40 body and buy a 70-300 DG HSM MACRO Autofocus sigma lense? or the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II lens? is that a good idea maybe?

^70-300 is good for wildlife photos. its not an everyday lens. so it depends what kind of stuff u be shooting. but if i were u...d40 + kit lens is the way to go.
