What is a good DSLR and lense to start with? Trying to get a gift for someone. No film. Has to be digital to start with.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I'm a Canon fan and I think any of the rebels would be good to start off with. I personally like the T2i a lot, although I do have the 7D. Definitely get the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens for about $100. It is a great lens for a bargain price.

- Btw, I owned a Canon s95 and I got rid of it cause I hated how the white looked so bright so I would like suggestions on something that isnt this

You sure you didn't just over expose? It's quite usual to shoot at -1/3 exposure with the s95. I do this, and i've never been bothered with the whites...

what's a good lens to get for a nikon after playing around with the 18-55 kit lens?
will primarily be using for portraits/stills, and video.

Canon t2i has dropped in price after the t3i came out. But the t2i is definitely a good starter camera. Same goes for nikon d90. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, the d3000 from Nikon or Canons 1000d are pretty decent too!

On another note; just picked up this pretty little thing:

Portraits and stuff, I'd say a 35 or 50mm. I love my 35mm haha!

yeah i was thinking that would be my next move, any suggestions on specific lenses?

Like brands and aperture? Since you shoot Nikon just get Nikon's 35mm or 50mm f/1.8, if you got the dough then the f/1.4 obv.

What about the Panasonic LX5?
May 01, 2011 @ 11:40:14

May 01, 2011 @ 12:53:09
Just curious what kind of camera doesn't it take to get this kind of quality in a video? Also what are the fps used when it was edited.

Probably a 5D Mark II, but you could probably get that quality with a 7D/T2i, most people would make it 24fps

Is there any difference between SLR camera bodies like the d3000, d700, or even d3x. Is it the same quality pic? same with cannon.

Huge difference. There's a REASON why their thousands of dollars apart.

I currently have a Nikon D60 with twin kit lenses and the 35mm 1.8 lens as well. What do you guys recommend as my next lens? Preferably a zoom that is good for carrying around/travelling and stuff.
May 04, 2011 @ 17:39:21
Well if you have the twins lens kit, and 35mm, why do you think you need a new lens?
I mean you have 18-200 covered, there's no need for a new lens, unless you want wide angle, which you dont.

The aperture is too small on both of the kit lenses. I was thinking of a getting a lens so that i wouldn't have to keep swapping between the two.

24-70 f/2.8 from Tamron or Sigma? I tried the Tamron version for a while. It was a sharp lens.

been contemplating about getting a t2i or t3i.

what are the differences in terms of video mode?
May 05, 2011 @ 05:49:37
T2i with magic latern. Hands down.

^ I don't think there's much difference in terms of quality,
the t3i has manual audio adjustment and the t2i doesn't
there's ways around this...

Magic Lantern sounds cool just not sure about downloading
something onto my camera

I'm planning on getting a T2i, T3i is a but too expensive

If the t3i is too expensive, just the t2i with magic latern then.

Thanks for the recommendations. The reviews for the Tamron don't sound to good though haha.

I heard the Sigma one was better. But i would honestly just get a Tamron or Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. But that's alot of money.
