what kinds of pens/markers do you use to get really opaque white lines layered on top like that?

Bic white-out pens. The Prestos were the best, but they were discontinued. You have to play around with them for a bit to get the right amount of squeeze-to-push ratio, but it works great for highlights

The only markers that are opaque are paint markers, not any design markers. Those are all alcohol based, with no xylene in them.

Roseart 2 ended joints, one end is paint like, nib is waste though, but can't beat the price. White out pens are key for white. Decos are dece if you flip the nib. There are some decent silver thin liners out there too, but the brand escapes me at the moment.

Highlighters, white out, roseart, sharpies > most things, at least for day to day jawnz. I feel dumb when I look back on using Prismas before I could even do a 1/2 dece throw. Ghetto tools all day, living 2 blocks from a $1 store is nice.

try putting cardboard paper under??
