I have a nikon d3100 with the starter zoom kit.
Don't really shoot much besides when I travel, looking to get a new lens or two.

Thinking about the 35mm or 50mm, and maybe the 55-200mm as well
Which ones should i get? Any other recommendations?

Definitely purchase the Nikon 50mm/1.8, it's a great and sharp lens when it comes to photography. And it's around $150 depending on where you buy it. I own the 50mm/1.4 as well and it's not worth the jump to spend 200 dollars more.

Can't go wrong with a prime lens. I prefer 35mm/50mm

I hear 50mm is fx lens and not as versatile for a dx camera? True?

The Nikon lenses I recommended are DX format, you should be fine with the D3100. Also, it's true that it's not as versatile due to the fact that FX Format is full frame, therefore using FX on DX Body would result in a sensor crop.

no the fx doesnt work with dx. the 50 turns to like 80 ish. but if u have a dx lens on an fx body it turns to the dx lens focal size, the body knows
