Trying to step into the portrait taking game. Any constructive criticism is welcome.

In portraits good lighting is EVERYTHING (most of photography is) in this shot you got some shadows under the eyes meaning the light source was above him, you can do quite a few things to correct this. You could make him look up and shoot higher. You could use a reflector to even the lighting on his face. or shoot in all shade (that's what i'd say the easiest way to get even lighting) Or you could have just taken this shot at a different time of the day. Hopefully this helps!
