Either manual or aperture priority. Shutter priority sometimes, but rarely.

Mostly aperture mode but when i have the time and the meters don't detect the exposure i want i go manual.

probably going to get flamed, but mostly auto. ive only had my SLR for a couple of months though. messed around with shutter priority and aperture priority a bit, but for parties etc i just cant be fucked mucking around with it. ive noticed that if it is too overexposed or whatever i can just touch it up in photoshop and they come out decent.

It's the settings like Standard/Portrait/Landscape/Faithful/Neutral, stuff that messes with sharpness/contranst/Saturation/Color Tone inside the camera. I've always shot flat for video, so I have a custom picture style for video, but what is the proper thing to do for photos?

Manual

D300s makes it so easy to shoot in manual. The dials for shutter speed and aperture are in a nice place so you can easily read the light meter and adjust your settings on the go.

Sometimes ill use Programmable Auto if i dont have time to set up the perfect shot.


Sometimes ill also use shutter priority when my main focus is crispness, ill set to what i feel comfortable holding and ill adjust aperture and iso accordingly.

Ah, i see. I have a custom made one, with reduced sharpness, contrast and saturation, for a more "natural" look. And i often shoot at the cloudy white balance setting when i shoot outdoors...

I use shutter priority pretty much all the time and my pics come out pretty good by my standards. I'm surprised how many people use Aperture priority; I should try using that and manual and see the result.

Manual. I want to start using Time Value, but I need a tri-pod for that. I also just go to auto if I am trying to get a quick shot.

In less well lit conditions (handheld): Tv (to reduce hand shake...)

Aperture priority most definitely. Adjusting the aperture gets you the best possible 'artistically correct' shots. Shutter speed I don't touch unless i'm shooting something that I want to see motion out of (usually at night).. waters, cars, etc. Sometimes I cheat with Auto.. but that's only when i'm in extremely rushed situations where the moment matters more than the setting.
