Upgrade lens first or body?

My current body is the Canon Rebel XS
w/ 18-55mm kit lens and 50mm f1.8 prime lens
I have about 650$ right now, but I'm not sure if I should either sell my xs body and buy a 60d or buy a 17-50mm f2.8 tamron first and then sell my body later and upgrade to 60d when I get more money. I know normally you upgrade lens first, but the xs isn't a great body and I kind of want HD video recording. If I upgrade the lens first, It'll be awhile until I get enough for the 60d body and idk if canon will lower prices or when canon is going to release another body so I don't wanna buy a lens, then wait a while to get the 60d only to have canon release a better model right after. Opinions?

I agree nice glass will make your photos on the xs just pop. The 60d was just released, i think the next camera to come out is the 5d mark3 or something to replace the 7d. So you should have some time to save an buy the 60d without it being outdated.

I shoot just about everything. I'm taking a photography class right now. I also plan on making promos and videos so thats another reason why I want the 60d so I can record in HD. Thanks for the advice guys. I might get the glass first, but I heard the 60d is getting a 100$ rebate next week so I'm still not sure yet.

Lenses are over hyped. Lenses can only do so much with what the body/sensor can handle. Then you're at the bottleneck of the body.

lenses hold your value and aren't replaced every year like bodies are.

body.. if you want to shoot video that is. the build quality and ergonomics are way better on the 60d. keep the 50mm 1.8 and buy a 24mm 2.8 or a similar fast wide prime when you have the funds. normally i would say upgrade the lens, but i think you'll get a lot more out of upgrading the rebel to a 60d (bettergrip/buttonlayout/wirelessflashcontrol/hdvideo/etc) rather than just getting new glass

Normally I would say lens for sure, but if your existing camera body isn't doing what you need it to do then upgrade.

Don't be like my friend though. He has a D3S paired with some crappy Nikon zoom lens. Horrible stuff.

agreed, if your camera body is not doing what you think it should do, i think you should consider a flash and a new body. the two lens you have right now are decent lenses and don't deserve too much dis-credit considering your budget isn't amazingly high right now. i personally, have never been a fan of the older Canon Rebel series.

1. Persons experience, skill,&knowledge
2. Lens
3. Body

1 being the most important one... They have Photo Books with shots takin by Iphones, disposable cameras, etc...

upgrade lens for sure , I got an XS too and I can take way better looking pics with a 50mm 1.8 more than with the standard 18-55mm , obviously a good camera body is important too
