Been using the D40 with the kit lens for about 2 years now. Haven't really read anything about photography or other lenses but I did do quite a bit of shooting to know how to work my camera.

Looking for an lens upgrade but don't know what to get. Going to be doing a lot of travelling, pictures of food, party pictures, everyday blogging etc.

Looking to get an external flash as well, suggestions on those?

I dropped my camera lightly, UV filter shattered (no biggy) but now my flash doesn't work. Every time I try and snap a picture with the flash on all I get is a clicking noise, is this easily fixable? Or serious problem?

Thanks to all replies.

upgrade to a beginner level dslr with video capability, it comes in handy for everyday shooting

get a nikon sb600 or a canon 430ex ii for flashes

a 15-85 lens from canon would be nice but you use nikon so oh well

I was looking at the t2i but if I wanted to upgrade my camera that would require me to sell my D40. I'm not going to be in the States for a while so it would kind of be a hassle to sell it here in China IMO.

I'll still consider it if that's what people highly recommend but otherwise a lens suggestion would probably be my first go to option.

with a D40, you're gonna want AF-S lenses because the D40 doesn't have the auto-focus motor in the camera body, you'll need the lenses with the motor in the lens.

50mm is a cheap option but won't auto-focus on our body. the AF-S 35mm is about $200 and the f/1.8 will help you in the low light situation without flash.

i think the best Nikon DX lens that will work for you body is the 17-55mm f/2.8. it's gonna be about $700-800 on fredmiranda or craigslist. the Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5 is a good solid lens also.

if you want a flash, i personally think that the sb-400 is adequate for most circumstances. if you're doing light shooting the sb-400 is adequate for lighting rooms, fill flash, and even has bounce flash option. trust me, lugging a huge flash isn't the business.

I don't know anything about your flash issue but you should take it to a local camera shop for an estimate.

the D40's arent really worth much anymore if you can even find anybody to buy em because they've phased em out completely and people can find D3100's for like $300-400. I say just shoot with your D40.

After reading some reviews I think I'm going to go with the 35mm f/1.8. Not crazy expensive and I think it will be better for me than the 50mm...

18-200 is a great all-around lens. Sb-400 or 600 for flash

This. It has built in auto focus, too...

And your flash problem, the same happened to me. Have you tried "helping" it up when you press the flash button? Or just turning the camera upside down to get it out. That worked for me.

A bit out of my price range TBH.

Looks like I'm going to go with the 35mm 1.8g unless someone can talk me out of it. Thanks to all replies!

Go for it, it's almost as sharp as my Tamron.

I use a D5000, might convert to Canon and sell my lenses. idk.

Look through your photos and find out what focal range youve been shooting. After my kit i upgraded to nikons 35mm f/1.8. probably one of nikons best lenses for the money. super sharp around f/2.2. With the upgrade to a wider aperture you can get more in depth with your ISO settings and take some great low light shots. Also on a dx format camera the lens acts as a 50mm on a FX which i the closest to the focal area of a human eye.

pick up a sb600 flash as well from nikons refurbished store. for around $400 youll get a great flash and lens.
