How did you guys get into photography?

I've been looking at the daily snaps, and wow, they're pretty damn impressive. How did you guys get into photography? I want to get into photography, but I don't know shit about it. Should I take a class. Just do internet research? When is the right time to buy a decent camera (rather then using a standard digital camera)? Thanks for any input.

Get a decent camera now and just start taking pictures. If you're really into it you'll automatically do research. Classes wouldn't hurt too.

Started shooting 3 years ago, just for fun. Its evolved to shooting clothing companies and weddings/engagement shoots. Just get a camera and go out and shoot that's the best way to learn, besides taking classes that is. good luck!cool

Started off with a family digital camera that I always messed around with...

... I was amazed by the difference in picture quality
of some pics I saw online compared to the ones the digi cam I used produced.

I then researched what camera could would produce these crisp images.

Got a Canon Rebel XT for my 14th birthday... I'm turning 17 in Dec.

I won't lie, at first, I just wanted a DSLR to get those crisp images.

But through time I found that photography was something that truely interested me.

When I was really young I think I liked playing around with cameras, I kind of forgot about that actually until recently, maybe this past year and a half or so. I considered getting a DSLR for a while and finally did, which was cool to me because I had forgotten how I've been at least somewhat into photography since I was a kid and the interest is back now.

I started shooting with a point-and-shoot camera. After that some how i came up on a nikon and started taking lots of pictures. Started shooting pictures of my friends and they started noticing that i had a nitch for it and the rest is history.

I've always been into documenting stuff. When i was younger i kept a diary and after a while it just developed into taking photos instead of writing. So for me it was/is mostly about documenting life, but i've been getting more and more into the "art" side of it the past few years...

I consider myself a beginner, and i use the Nikon D40 kit that they sell at bestbuy. I got it last christmas and it hasn't done me any harm. taught myself pretty much everything i know. didn't know much about dslr cameras except that they took great pictures.

Buy a digi cam that has manuel settngs and start messing with it and expirementing.
After you learn you'll then want to get a better camera to learn more.

I bought my first DSLR last year and I just assumed my pictures would be amazing right out of the box. They weren't lol, thats what made me get interested in photography, i wanted to take good pics.

My dad is a photographer.. so that helps. I also did alot of online research.. reading.. everything is provided for you here on the interwebz, you just have to find it and read it. Good luck!

Couldn't agree more.. photography is all hands on... all experimenting and messing with different buttons and such. I stated too by picking up my dads camera.. my first camera I ever played with was the Canon EOS Rebel..

My dad had cameras and i always admired his old photos i would find..
Nowadays it's less important to take a class to begin.. however, i think it's good to take classes if you decide you want to be a professional... it's crazy how easy it is to distinguish between bad and good photography after you take some classes and start working in the real world....

i hated photography at first, especially pictures with me in it, then i started working at bestbuy and got tired of lying to people about what this camera does and really started doing research,took a class, and fucked with free dslrs'(before they "got hot") and found that it gives me peace and finally found and artistic outlet, really don't do like the model thing, but i mostly do nature or urban shots, it's hella theraputic after my last break upcool
