you probably can get similar IQ with a good point & shoot. I've hearing a lot of good things about Panasonic LX5. Actually I'm getting one soon as a second shooter.

D50 came out after the d40 though right? This is what du told me.

I used to have a D40 but they only auto focus with the new DX lenses and that severely limited my choices to expensive lenses, so I got rid of it..  The D50, D70, D80, etc, work with all auto focus (AF) lenses as well as DX lenses and you can get a very reasonable stable of good used equipment to go with them.  The D50 was introduced after the D40 so I wouldn't trust the information you are getting.  My bottom number on the bundle is $300.00.

Are you sure the d50 is newer then the d40?

The only think I know about the d50 is that its the Old version of the d60 which got replaced by the d5000. Anyways your right, D40/60 can only use AF-S lenses but honestly those are the best lenses anyway.

I suggest the d60, you can find one for around 300. And like I said earlier, the d50 has the old sensor, i think even the same one as the d40.

The D40 actually in a way replaced the D50 for a time followed by the D40X and eventually the D60 filled in. Optically the the two cameras are similar. The major advantage is the D50 will autofocus on all AF lenses. If you dont mind the D50 being a year older and thus most likely having more shutter releases then go for the D50

Speaking of which, I've got a mint D40 body that I bought as a backup but didnt really end up using much. Its sitting in the box in my closet if anyone else is looking for one. Otherwise I'm just going to stick it on craigslist.

Canon, XTI/XS, they're essentially nearly the same, depends which angle you look at it.
Nikon, D40.
