Seems as if its the new entry level model to replace the D40/60. it has some good features that are certainly better than the D40/60 as well as some of the perks of the D90. Still no AF motor so there's no point in getting one of these instead upgrading to the D90.

Eh, I don't think they did anything significant enough to warrant an upgrade. They probably just felt that the D40 has been out for too long and thus felt obliged to replace it.

i think msrp is like 700ish. I think it'll be found on the street for 600 in a few months when the hype dies down.

Reason to upgrade, it does video. Although it has the stupid sony dslr style screen.

I want to cop as my first cam, given it's way to much for a newb but I don't give a fuck.

When does it come out?

msrp more like 849 with kit lens and 799 for just body.

the swivel screen with live view and hd video capability seems like a decent enough upgrade from the D40. they needed something to match the T1I.

i'm more interested in this though.

even though this is still all speculation.

yeah, but street prices on cameras go down pretty fast. I waited a couple months to get my d90(only switched bodies to do video) and I got it for like 850 with the body only. It was supposed to be like 1100 bucks. And I didn't buy it online, bought it from sammy's on fairfax.

if the d400 has external mic inputs I may have to dump my d90 for it. I don't really need the extra resolution but the mic on the d90 sucks donkey balls.

What the hell is up with the Nikon naming/numbering scheme? D300>D90>D5000....wtf. Its fucking stupid if you ask me.

And what are the key selling points for a D90 over a D5000? Looks like they have the same 12.3mp sensor and 11 point AF. Guess the D90 has 4.5fps over the 4fps of the D5000.

D90 has an autofocus motor, D5000 doesn't.

Okay, given i ain't really a big photography fan, but still why worry so much about the recording functions on a Camera??? why not just get a cheap handycam or something on the side???

u can cheat the aperture on a dslr to have a low depth of field. A handycam won't be able to do that. You also can use change lenses on a dslr, you can't on a handycam. I can show u my video project that I did for my intermedia class at usc, but I'd rather not post it b/c I know it can be read the wrong way. And it might be making fun of certain elements of this website... as well as myself.

this is another example of why a dslr is particularly useful for making videos. my buddy in my class made it. Watch it in HD if you can

D5000 and D90 are both similar except that the D90 has the AF motor inside, .5 more FPS and just other things but they both can shoot videos and both have the same amount of MP. The D5000 is also cheaper then the D90.
