I always wondered, with streetwear companies, can the owners make a living off the companies or do you guys have day jobs too? If so, what do you do for the rest of the time that you're not doing clothing stuff?
i work at a store that sells streetwear
and complain on the side

When I first started Diamond I worked at FTC skateshop in SF during the day and Bar backed at a busy restaurant in Ghiradelli Square at nite.
I also sold anything I could get my hands on....I Just hustled for enough money to produce shirts and hoodies. It was a rough long road tryin to make gear, have food on the table and pay rent, but it was all well worth it.
I started Diamond 8 years ago and have been living off Diamond alone for over six years.... I feel like I have the best job in the world and couldn't ask for anything more.

I still rock my day job.... it's been almost 3 years since I started 3sixteen and I've held a day job the entire way. It has nothing to do with what I enjoy but it pays the mortgage and puts food on the table, and I live comfortably so I cant really front on that. (I do IT consulting so I travel a lot and work at client sites with database programming and things of that nature.) Plus being married, I have responsibilities to own up to... it's not just about me anymore, I can't just run off and chase pipe dreams without them affecting other people besides me. I don't regret how things are, in fact things couldnt be better. Of course I would like to make 3sixteen my full time job and we're working towards making that happen one day... but for now, I'm comfortable and I've assembled a strong team that can help out with the company and cover all the necessary design/marketing/sales work that I can't always get to when I am occupied.

Dude, don't even try to front like Great Dane has afforded you all that shit. You've been living easy because you are an insurance agent in 18 states. If your "line" (believe me, I don't even want to validate it by calling it that, but IDK...) was really that bangin', you wouldn't be trying to sell backstock for chump change, or talk about how you learned the hardway about getting into the industry.
Oh yeah, personally I think you should just stick to insurance. It's obvious that design isn't your strong point.

thanks man... sometimes i do wish that i could just throw caution to the wind and run with it, but i got people on payroll doing a good job and i am gonna ride it out (i make way more at the day job than i ever could off the clothing) and see what happens in the next year, as things look like they're going to grow pretty quickly. i'd rather be careful than end up with a company going belly up that i worked so hard on, and have nothing in my bank account as well.
Very respectable my dude.

the way i figure it, the average entrepanaur fails three times before he makes it. plus, it takes substantial risks and sweat to make anything work, like working out. so, i made some decent money this first time, even off a sucky line, I'll be honest. but i learned a hell of a lot. how to deal with retailers, customers, printers, etc. more than i ever would in my BA program.
now i know that customers are damn tough critics and i love it. we'll see if it pans out for the fall line.
but i too have a family, well i will. im getting married august 11 of this year. i want to be successful for my kids but i want to make the most of my life, too. i want to show people who doubted me that i was special and still am. that's why i was so happy meeting kanye, that really meant something to me.it felt like i was making things happen...

Am I the only one who thinks Dane is a cool dude? He's aiight, man!!
And it's all about holding down that day job, having something to fall back on.
Granted, I'd LOVE to tell my boss "blow me" and just bounce, but being there helps me out with alot of my shit, i.e. tees, hoodies, jackets. What you know about lasering??

I hate on dude for having way too much swagger and not enough clout. Dude hasn't done anything noteworthy, and yet his approach towards topics on this board always come off as condescending. Talk about being an internet hero. And regardless of whether you have or haven't "blown up" in Chicago, guess what? IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER. That city is five years behind on everything anyways. Isn't that right DBlock?
Also, Dane and Invasion should go get a room so that they can mutually masturbate each other in privacy. Seriously dawg, instead of spending money on laser engraved wood block keychains, why don't you work on actually making some worthwhile designs. Two crappy lines big upping each other, how cute.
